NHL: Washington Capitals at Montreal Canadiens

With two goals in his first three games, Patrik Laine has made an immediate impact on the Montreal Canadiens as they prepare to host the Anaheim Ducks on Monday night.

The Habs are looking to bounce back from a 4-2 loss against Washington at the Bell Centre on Saturday before hosting the Penguins on Thursday. Anaheim just made a big splash on the trade market as they look to end a two-game skid in the first leg of a four-game road trip.

The Canadiens are -145 favourites to win on the NHL odds, with the total set at 6.0.

Ducks vs. Canadiens NHL Betting Odds

Montreal swept the season series last year, outscoring Anaheim 9-3 across the two games. Neither team looks like they’ll push for a playoff spot this year, as they both sit last in their respective divisions with 23 points each.

The Canadiens and Ducks each have 10 wins on the season, but it’s Anaheim that has been the better cover option at 17-8 against the spread, while Montreal is 14-13 ATS.

As a Western Conference team, it makes since that the Ducks have historically struggled with the long trip to the Bell Centre, dropping six of their last eight games in Montreal. Keep in mind, however, the Canadiens have lost four of five home games against Pacific Division opponents this season.

Anaheim Ducks

As mentioned, the Ducks made a major trade a few days ago, acquiring former New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba in exchange for defenceman Urho Vaakanainen and a 2025 fourth-round draft pick. With six assists on the year, Trouba isn’t going to turn Anaheim’s 30th-ranked offence around, but the hard-hitting blue liner is known for his physically tough playing style and he should provide some needed veteran leadership on a young roster.

Lukas Dostal is expected to start in net on Monday. Dostal has solid numbers this season, posting a 6-7-2 record with a 2.73 goals-against average and .921 save percentage, but his play has dipped significantly in the last month. The 24-year-old has five losses in seven outings since the start of November and he’s allowed at least three goals in six of those games.

Montreal Canadiens

The Habs had a 2-0 lead heading into the second period on Saturday, but they were outshot 26-14 over the final two frames while giving up four unanswered goals for their seventh blown lead of the season. Cole Caufield and Alex Newhook had the goals, while Samuel Montembeault made 31 saves. After scoring in each of his first two games, Patrik Laine was held pointless for the first time as a member of the Canadiens.

Montembeault will start for Montreal on Monday. Recently named to Canada’s roster for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-off, Montembeault has been spectacular over his last four games, going 2-1-0 with a 1.67 GAA and .947 SV. For the season, he is 8-11-2 with a 2.89 GAA and .905 SV. Those are great numbers considering the Habs are only providing 2.78 goals per game in offensive support (23rd in the NHL).
