Vancouver Canucks vs. Boston Bruins Prediction, NHL Odds

Even after Tuesday’s action, a night on which Boston fell at home to the Calgary Flames 4-1, they and the Canucks are still the top two clubs in the NHL, points-wise. Vancouver was in tough on the road against a stern Hurricanes side, but new addition Elias Lindholm helped Vancouver skate to a 3-2 win.

Canucks vs. Bruins NHL Betting Odds

Boston has been a Cup contender for years so seeing them atop the Atlantic Division and in a dogfight for the President’s trophy is par for the course. The Canucks, on the other hand, were not expected to be as good as they are. They only got better by recently trading with Calgary for Elias Lindholm, which saw Andrei Kuzmenko head to Alberta.

It’s been a minute since the Canucks have had success against their opponents from the East Coast. December 2021 was the last time the B.C.-based ensemble earned the spoils. That was at home. We have to go back to November 2018 for the most recent example of the Canucks getting the better of the Bruins at TD Garden.

Not only do the Canucks continue to defy expectations in the regular standings, but so too have they impressed ATS this season. At 33-17, Vancouver is one of the most trustworthy clubs in the NHL vis-à-vis the puckline. Ironically, they still have a great record despite going 3-5 ATS in their last eight matches. Neither the over nor the under have found consistency, posting a 5-5 tally in the last 10.

Boston’s efforts ATS haven’t been bad at all, as it has gone 27-23 thus far. Of course, the weight of expectations is heavy on teams like the Bruins, who are “supposed” to win every night, oftentimes by more than one goal. Thursday’s contest will feature two of the league’s top points getters David Pastrnak and J.T. Miller, who have 73 and 68 points, respectively. In fact, Vancouver has two more players in the top 10, Elias Pettersson (65) and Quinn Hughes (64).

Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks’ east-bound road trip began on Tuesday at the Carolina Hurricanes. No simple task given how consistent the Canes have been the past few seasons and how generally good they are at home.

To that point, it was as close as games get. Carolina’s defensive play nullified Vancouver’s attacking prowess for much of the evening, conceding only 19 total shots on target. But as is so often the case with new signings who want to make a quick impression, Lindholm netted twice (10th and 11th), both times on the power play and via deflections. The first tied the game at 1-1 and the second gave the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

Given how tough it was to create chances, it seemed fitting that J.T. Miller’s winner (22nd) would come off a broken play. Carolina’s goalie fell asleep at the wheel a bit with a puck that careened against the backboard, with Miller potting in the winner amidst confusion in the crease. Canucks take it 3-2.

Boston Bruins

Perhaps the Bruins’ legs were heavy after the All-Star Game break, but that wouldn’t explain why the visiting Flames looked so fresh. Boston doesn’t play poorly at home often, but this was one of those rare instances of inept hockey.

From the word go the Bruins looked like the second-best team on the ice. A total of 22 shots on goal from a team as good as this isn’t a good sign. Sloppy play led to a 2-0 hole by the end of the first period. A scoreless middle frame meant all was to play for with 20 minutes to go. The Bruns made it interesting on the power play through Pavel Zacha (11th) but more questionable defence and netminding allowed Calgary to score twice more for the 4-1 win. G Jeremy Swayman looked a beat slow on some shots.
