Montreal Canadiens vs. Edmonton Oilers Prediction, NHL Odds

Montreal played in Calgary last night, winning 2-1 in overtime with Mike Matheson ending up as the hero in the extra period. The win improved Montreal’s record to 6-2 this season which has them atop the Atlantic Division.

Edmonton’s returning home after a lacklustre five-game road trip that saw them finish 2-3. The positive news is the Oilers are coming off a win, defeating Ottawa 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday. Just like Matheson last night in Calgary, Edmonton had a defenceman win the game in overtime as Jake Walman fired home the game-winner and took the 3-3-1 Oilers to the win column.

Puck drop at Rogers Place goes at 9 p.m. EDT with the Oilers a -225 moneyline favourite on home ice and the over-under at six on the NHL odds.

Canadiens vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds

Montreal is starting to earn some respect from the oddsmakers; so far the Habs have been favoured in six of their eight games, but are back to being an underdog as it’s a back-to-back spot at Edmonton. The Oilers have been favoured in all of their seven games so far. Thursday is just Edmonton’s third home game of the season, they are 1-0-1 so far but Rogers Place has become one of the most difficult arenas to win at the last couple seasons. The Oilers are 4-2 in their last six times hosting Montreal.

Four of the last five Canadiens–Oilers contests have finished under the total, including both of last year’s contests. In the last four Montreal–Edmonton meetings, no game has finished with more than five combined goals and the winning team has not scored more than three times. But with superstars blossoming on each side, one would think these trends come to an end.

Montreal Canadiens

The Canadiens elected to start Jakub Dobes last night in Calgary and save starter Sam Montembeault for Edmonton on Thursday and the first leg of the move completely paid off. Dobes turned away 36 shots last night, giving Montreal a chance to steal a win at Calgary and they did exactly that. Ivan Demidov fed Mike Matheson for the overtime winner, kicking off a four-game road trip with a big win.

With an assist on Montreal’s first goal, Nick Suzuki extended his point streak to seven games. Suzuki has had multiple points in three of those seven games and has an assist in six of the seven games, and also leads Montreal with 11 points. Suzuki’s assist yesterday came on Zack Bolduc’s opening tally, whose four goals is second to Cole Caufield on the team.

Edmonton Oilers

Jake Walman is scoring an overtime-winner per game for the Oilers, as Tuesday marked his season debut and he ended the contest with a blast in overtime. But maybe more importantly, Connor McDavid is now on the board in the 2025–26 NHL season after opening the scoring on Tuesday. Isaac Howard scored Edmonton’s other goal in 3-2 win, his first of his NHL career. With McDavid finally scoring, Walman returning and making his presence felt, and a youngen like Howard contributing, Tuesday felt like Edmonton is starting to be their dangerous selves.

McDavid’s eight points still lead the Oilers, while a strong start for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has him right behind with seven. Nugent-Hopkins finished with a goal and two assists in Edmonton’s season opener at home, so he’ll be looking to keep the home cooking going against Montreal. McDavid’s found success against Montreal too, registering 34 points in 27 games against the Habs in his career.
