Montreal Canadiens vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Game 5 Prediction, Playoff Odds

There’s still life in the Montreal Canadiens after their 3-2 overtime win against the Lightning on Monday.  The Habs extended the series despite getting outshot 34-21 in the game, including 4-2 in overtime.  Tampa will now get a chance to clinch their second straight Stanley Cup in front of a home crowd, after winning in last year’s playoff bubble with no fans.

The Lightning are -212 favourites to win on the NHL odds, with a total of 5.0.

Canadiens vs. Lightning Stanley Cup Odds

Sports Interaction bettors like the underdog in this one as about 60 per cent of the action is taking the Habs.  There’s a stronger consensus on the total with 88 per cent of bettors taking the Over.  There’s been two Overs, one Under and a Push in the series.

Monday’s win broke a seven-game losing streak for Montreal against the Lightning.  They haven’t been any better in Tampa, losing their last eight games at Amalie Arena.  The Habs are +1600 underdogs to complete the series comeback.  Not counting this series, 199 teams have trailed 0-3 in the playoffs in NHL history (three this year) and only four have rallied to win the series.

The Bolts will be looking to lift the Cup in front of their home crowd at Amalie Arena, where they’ve won five straight games.  They’re massive -10000 favourites to win the series.  At -229, the favoured exact series score sees Tampa winning the series in Game 5.

Montreal Canadiens

It was Josh Anderson’s turn to play hero on Monday.  Anderson scored the opening goal of the game and the overtime winner.  He also scored the overtime winner in Game 3 against Vegas, making him just the eighth player in franchise history to score multiple overtime goals in the same postseason.  Montreal is 6-1 in overtime games in the 2021 playoffs.  The last time the Habs played at least seven overtime games in a single postseason, they went on to win the Stanley Cup in 1993.  Alexander Romanov scored Montreal’s other goal, picking up his first point of the playoffs in his series debut.  Romanov has been a healthy scratch for all but three games in the playoffs.  Carey Price made 32 saves in the win.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Nobody on the Lightning will ever admit, but there’s probably a small part of them that would rather win at home in Game 5 than on the road in Game 4.  This is a veteran team that won’t get rattled with one loss, so there’s no panic buttons being hit in Tampa.  The Bolts have been surprisingly poor in overtime during the playoffs, losing all four games that went beyond regulation.  Barclay Goodrow and Pat Maroon each scored their second goals of the playoffs in the loss.  Maroon will join elite company with one more win.  After winning the Stanley Cup with St. Louis in 2019 and Tampa in 2020, Maroon can become just the fourth player in NHL history (and first since 1964) to win the Cup three straight years with two different teams.  Andrei Vasilevskiy made 18 saves in Monday’s loss.
