The Edmonton Oilers hot start is fading quickly. After winning seven of their first eight games this season, they’ve reverted back to the Oilers of old. They are coming off a loss to Arizona on Monday, which was their fifth in their last eight games. They’ve also lost two in a row at home after winning each of their first five at the Rogers Place. Can they turn it around when the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues visit on Wednesday?

Blues vs. Oilers Betting Analysis

St. Louis has scored four goals or more in three of its last four wins. However, the Blues have won each of those contests by a single goal, including three in overtime. St. Louis is 4-2-1 straight up as the visiting team this season but 3-5 on the puck line. The Blues went 2-0-1 versus Edmonton last season.

Meanwhile, the Oilers fell to the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 in overtime in their last home game to fall to 5-1-1 on home ice this season. Edmonton has gone 2-5 on the puck line at Rogers Place this season. The Oilers are 5-1 in their last six games against opponents with a winning record. And are also 4-1 in its last five games as a home favorite.

St. Louis Blues

The defending Stanley Cup champion Blues got the best of the Oilers last season thanks to their strong defensive play and timely goal scoring. Based on what we have seen from them of late, that could be the case again on Wednesday. St. Louis has thrived this season thanks in large part to the play of Ryan O’Reilly and David Perron. O’Reilly has led the Blues with 16 points while Perron is right behind him with 15, including four game-winning goals. Meanwhile, goaltender Jordan Binnington has held opponents to two goals or fewer in four of his last six starts. Jake Allen has struggled out of the gate again this season, giving up 11 goals in three games so far, so there is a good chance that Binnington will get the nod again versus the Oilers.

Edmonton Oilers

While Binnington has run with the starting job in St. Louis since taking over for Allen last season, Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen continue to battle for the starting job in Edmonton. Smith allowed a single goal in each of his last two starts in wins over the Columbus Blue Jackets and Pittsburgh Penguins. Koskinen has fallen back as he’s lost three in a row after winning his first five starts. Smith will likely be between the pipes again versus the Blues.

Meanwhile, the Oilers continue to lean heavily on their superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl up front. Draisaitl is up to 27 points on the season, while McDavid has 24. After a hot start, James Neal has cooled a bit with just one goal in his last four games. Meanwhile, Edmonton still need more out of players like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Alex Chiasson, who have struggled to produce at the offensive need of the ice this season. Even James Neal has cooled off as he has just three points in his last eight games. He had 10 in his first eight contests. Draisatl and McDavid each have at least 24 points; only one other player on the team (Neal) has even reached double-digits.

With the Oilers still relying too much on their superstars to carry the load, it could spell trouble against the defending champs. Under could be the way to go in this game.
