Colorado Avalanche vs. Winnipeg Jets Prediction, NHL Odds

The Colorado Avalanche are set to take on the Winnipeg Jets at Canada Life Centre on Thursday night. These teams are in very different places in the standings, as Colorado’s 104 points are the most in the NHL, while Winnipeg’s 72 points have the Jets five points out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

This will be the third of four meetings between the Avalanche and Jets this season. Colorado won 3-2 back on December 19, while Winnipeg got revenge with a 3-1 win on March 14. After meeting in Winnipeg on Thursday, these two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Colorado.

Avalanche vs. Jets NHL Betting Odds

The Avalanche own a record of 47-13-10 on the season, while the Jets are 30-29-12. With the Avalanche so far ahead of the Jets in the standings, it’s not surprising to see Colorado heavily favoured to find the win column in this matchup. The Avalanche enter with odds of -192 on the moneyline while the Jets are at +160.

It’s also not surprising to see that the Avalanche have been the better team when it comes to the puckline as well. So far this season, Colorado is 36-34-0 against the spread while Winnipeg is 33-38-0. In this matchup, Colorado -1.5 is valued at +136, while Winnipeg +1.5 has odds of -162. The game total is set at 6.5, with odds of +105 to the over and -125 to the under. The Avalanche have seen more games stay under the total than go over, as the under is 38-30-2. On the other side, the Jets have played in more high-scoring games, with the over going 36-33-2 in their 71 games so far this season.

With odds of -105, Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon has the shortest odds of any player to score a goal in this contest, as he leads the NHL with 46 goals on the season. With odds of +165, Kyle Connor has the shortest odds to score a goal among all players for Winnipeg. Connor is tied with Mark Scheifele for the team lead in goals with 32 for the Jets.

Colorado Avalanche

Colorado has been among the best teams in the NHL all season long. Their 47 overall wins and 41 regulation wins both lead the league, and they enter this matchup riding a three-game win streak. Colorado has also been impressive on the road, owning a strong 24-7-5 record away from Ball Arena.

With plenty of offensive firepower led by superstars MacKinnon and Cale Makar, the Avalanche lead the NHL scoring 3.71 goals per game. Interestingly enough, the Colorado power play hasn’t been particularly effective this season, ranking 27th with a conversion rate of 16.7 per cent. Nonetheless, Colorado still owns one of the most explosive offences in the NHL, and with 13 goals over its last three games, enter this matchup on a roll.

The Avalanche bolstered their offensive attack even more at the trade deadline by acquiring Nazem Kadri. It’s Kadri’s second stint with Colorado, and he has provided solid depth scoring with five points on two goals and three assists through nine games with the Avs.

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets have been among the most disappointing teams in the NHL this season. Winnipeg has made the playoffs in seven of the last eight seasons, but are on the outside looking in when it comes to the Western Conference playoff picture at this point of the season.

Lack of power play success has plagued the Jets this season. After leading the entire NHL with a power play percentage of 28.9 per cent last season, Winnipeg’s power play ranks 24th with a conversion rate of 17.7 per cent. Gabriel Vilardi leads the team with 11 power play goals, while just three of Connor’s team-leading 32 goals have come on the man advantage.

Connor Hellebuyck has had an up-and-down season between the pipes, and the defensive core in front of him hasn’t exactly been stout. The Jets allow too many Grade A scoring chances to their opponents, and lack the scoring depth to make up for it.

NHL Prediction: Who Will Win Avalanche vs. Jets?

The Colorado offence is rolling right now, and Winnipeg simply lacks the scoring depth to keep up. The Jets held the Avalanche to just a single goal in their most recent meeting earlier this month, which could mean Colorado comes out with an aggressive game plan in the offensive zone on Thursday night. MacKinnon and company should be able to take advantage of their opportunities. I expect the Avalanche to win this game by a score of 5-2.
