Over at Sports Interaction’s online sportsbook, there’s a plethora of Super Bowl XLIV football props just waiting to be wagered upon. One of our favourites? The Over/Under on total passing yards compiled by Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning.
Right now, the number sits at 300.5 yards — and -125 for the over, -116 for the under. Let’s take a look at a few key statistical categories that would play into this type of NFL betting.
— Manning threw for 300 or more yards in nine of his 16 regular season games, and one of his two postseason contests. But, if you take into account he was rested for the final two weeks and — in Week 11 — threw for 299 yards against the Texans, the case could actually be made that 9-of-16 is more like 10-of-14. That’s a huge percentage jump, the kind you don’t necessarily want to bet against — especially when it comes against the game’s greatest QB on the game’s biggest stage.
— Manning doesn’t rely on just one receiver for the bulk of his yardage. If Reggie Wayne is silent, Dallas Clark picks up the slack. If Wayne and Clark are silent, Austin Collie steps in. Or Pierre Garcon. Or Joseph Addai. Each of those guys caught at least 50 passes this year, and in the AFC Championship against the Jets, it was Garcon and Collie (18 catches combined) that stood out while Wayne and Clark (7 catches combined) were largely blanketed.
— The New Orleans pass defense can be taken advantage of. While the Saints were amongst the NFL leaders in interceptions (26, third-most in the league), they allowed 235.6 passing yards per contest during the regular season, just 26th overall. A lot of this has to do with the numerous injuries suffered in the New Orleans secondary. CB Leigh Torrence, CB Reggie Jones, S Chip Vaughn were all placed on IR this year while Jabari Greer, Roman Harper and Randall Gay all missed time with various injuries.
