Patrick Mahomes has thanked teammates first during his Super Bowl MVP speech in back-to-back years.
Sure, betting on the coin toss of the colour of Gatorade dumped on the winning coach is fun, but if you really want to push the envelope for Super Bowl 59 exotic props, why not take a look at who the MVP will thank first in his speech?
Super Bowl 59 MVP odds
To no one’s surprise, Patrick Mahomes is the favourite to win Super Bowl MVP. He’s already won three Super Bowl MVPs and the award usually goes to the winning team’s quarterback.
Philadelphia bucks that trend, however, as running back Saquon Barkley has the second-shortest MVP odds. This season’s Offensive Player of the Year has a ridiculous 442 rushing yards and five TDs in three playoffs games and he’s a massive piece of the Eagles’ offensive game plan.
Who will be mentioned first in MVP speech?
For my pick, there’s some solid value on the Super Bowl MVP thanking his teammates first. Mahomes thanked his defence first last year and two years ago he started out with “shout out my teammates”.
And if you want to get into the weeds, it was Terry Bradshaw interviewing Mahomes two years ago and with Fox broadcasting the Super Bowl, Bradshaw will likely interview the MVP again this year. That’s important because every interviewer has a unique way of phrasing their questions and as a former player, Bradshaw usually starts by asking about the game, which naturally leads to talk about teammates.
Now, let me pour some cold water on the case I’ve just made. Mahomes thanked God during his first on-field interview following Kansas City’s AFC Championship win over Buffalo a couple of weeks ago.
Of course, all this is assuming Mahomes wins MVP. Barkley and Jalen Hurts are also top contenders. Remember, it was just a few days ago that Barkley won Offensive Player of the Year and in a pre-recorded speech he said:
“I’d like to give thanks to God first. Without Him, none of this would be possible. I’d like to give thanks to my family, my fiancee, my children, my mom and dad, my brothers and sisters, thank you guys so much for (your) love and support throughout this journey. I’d like to thank the fans of Philadelphia for showing so much love to me and my family, especially being the newcomers.”
It seems unlikely Andy Reid or Nick Sirianni will be thanked first. Where’s the love for the coaches!?
