NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens

Arguably the most anticipated Wild Card game is set for Saturday night in Baltimore as the Ravens prepare to host the Pittsburgh Steelers.

These teams enter the playoffs on opposite trajectories. The Ravens cruised to an AFC North crown on the back of a four-game win streak to close out the regular season, while the Steelers blew their shot at winning the division with a four-game losing skid.

Baltimore is a heavy 10-point favourite to win on the NFL odds, with the total set at 43.5.

This will be the sixth playoff meeting between Baltimore and Pittsburgh and the third head-to-head this season. The Steelers eked out an 18-16 home win in November, while the Ravens pounded Pittsburgh 34-17 a few days before Christmas. Derrick Henry was the MVP of the season series, torching the Steelers for 227 combined rushing yards and a TD in the two games.

As mentioned, Baltimore comes into this contest on a four-game win streak, beating the Giants, Steelers, Texans and Browns by an average of 23 points per game. On the flip side, the Steelers’ four-game cooler has seen them lose to Philadelphia, Baltimore, KC and Cincinnati by an average of 13 points per game.

This will be an interesting game for bettors as both teams were profitable in the regular season. The Ravens went 10-6-1 against the spread and Pittsburgh was 11-6 ATS. The edge might go to the Steelers, who have covered in four of their last five games against Baltimore.

Pittsburgh has split the Over/Under fairly evenly this year, while the Ravens have leaned heavily to higher scoring games, hitting the Over 13 times. It’s also worth noting the Steelers have finished above the number in six of their last seven road dates.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Russell Wilson is hitting a serious skid at the worst possible time. Over Pittsburgh’s four-game losing streak, Wilson has thrown for multiple TDs just once, he’s failed to crack 200 passing yards twice and he’s been sacked three or more times in three of those games. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Justin Fields get some reps on Saturday. The Steelers’ offence has struggled to generate anything positive over the last month and Fields is still a player who can move the ball on the ground.

While Pittsburgh’s defence is capable of preventing Baltimore from running away with this game early, the offence just doesn’t have what it takes to keep up. Wilson looks like his gas tank is completely empty and the Steelers can’t trust Fields with the ball. That leaves a lot on the shoulders of Najee Harris and with all due respect, I’ll take a Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry combo over Harris any day of the week.

Baltimore Ravens

Two-time league MVP Lamar Jackson has combined with star running back Derrick Henry to form one of the most lethal running attacks the NFL has seen in years. Henry has been incredibly impressive in his first season with Baltimore, rushing for 1,921 yards while leading the NFL with 16 rushing TDs. That’s in addition to Jackson, who will either win or finish runner-up in MVP voting this year after finishing the regular season with 4,172 passing yards, 41 passing TDs (second-most in NFL) and just four interceptions in addition to 915 rushing yards and another four TDs on the ground.

As good as Pittsburgh’s defence can be, I don’t see how they slow down this Ravens offence. Baltimore led the NFL in offensive yards per game, rushing yards per game, yards per rush and red zone scoring percentage. They put up 30.5 points per game (third in NFL) and just as importantly, they went 5-2 against AFC opponents, winning by an average of 14 points.
