The season is over for Ben Roethlisberger and it could be for the Pittsburgh Steelers too if the club doesn’t right the ship this weekend against the San Francisco 49ers. Pittsburgh is a heavy underdog on Sunday with Mason Rudolph starting in place of Big Ben under centre.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Subtract an All Pro quarterback from an NFL game and expect a large line movement. Sports Interaction opened the spread for this contest with the Steelers as 1-point road favourites. The line reopened with the visitors at +7. An eight point swing on the spread. Yowzers.

Seems like the betting market thought a touchdown spread was too large. Heading into midweek, the 49ers are 6.5-point chalk. Still, nearly 90 percent of SIA bettors are backing the Niners to cover the spread.

San Fran is a perfect 2-0 straight up and against the spread so far this season. The Steelers are the reverse; winless and still seeking their first outright win of the campaign.

The spread isn’t the only odds on the move in this matchup. The Over/Under line opened at 46.5 and dropped to 43.5. Points might be harder to come by for the Steelers without Big Ben on the field.

Pittsburgh’s defence is leaking all over though. They gave up 33 points to the Pats in Week 1 and followed it up by allowing 28 points to the Seahawks on Sunday.

Pittsburgh Steelers

For most of this decade, the Steelers were a threat in the AFC because of the Triple Bs. Big Ben, (Antonio) Brown and (Le’Veon) Bell. All three are absent now. What will Pittsburgh’s offence look like for the rest of the season? To be determined.

One thing is clear. The Steelers aren’t throwing in their terrible towels on this season. Pittsburgh traded its 2020 first round pick to the Miami Dolphins for defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick. The 11th overall pick in the 2018 draft was highly touted prospect coming out of Alabama. He’s a versatile DB who should be able to cover up a lot of Pitt’s holes in the secondary.

San Francisco 49ers

The last time the 49ers started a season 2-0 they made it to the Super Bowl. Yes, it’s been seven years since the Niners owned a flawless record after Week 2. San Fran racked up 572 offensive yards during a 41-17 romping of the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2.

It wasn’t all good news for San Francisco on Sunday. The team lost starting left tackle Joe Staley to a broken fibula during the third quarter. He’s expected to miss the next six to eight weeks.
