NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Color us a bit surprised that Seahawks-49ers was not the Sunday night game in Week 18 as the league and its TV partner opted to go with Ravens-Steelers. That’s just for a division title and the No. 4 seed in the AFC playoffs. This game is for the NFC West title, the conference’s top seed and lone first-round bye. Keep in mind that the Super Bowl is at Niners’ Levi’s Stadium home in February, so they literally would not have to leave home until the 2026 campaign.
In the event of a tie, Seattle would take the division title. The loser probably is the No. 5 and would visit either Carolina or Tampa Bay on Wild-Card Weekend. That doesn’t sound so bad, actually. Better than going to Chicago or Philadelphia. Seattle is +270 for the NFC title and San Francisco +450.
When the teams met in Seattle in Week 1, the Niners prevailed 17-13 on a late Brock Purdy 4-yard touchdown pass to seldom-used tight end Jake Tonges, who entered having never caught an NFL pass. Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolen got a hand on the ball, but it bounced off him and Tonges grabbed it. Seattle would drive to the San Francisco 9 with a chance to win, but Sam Darnold fumbled while being sacked and the Niners recovered. Darnold was quite mediocre in his team debut, and Seattle had just 234 yards of offence.
San Francisco is 6-4 SU & ATS in the past 10 meetings. The over-under is 4-6.
Seattle Seahawks
Seattle was in a possible trap spot Sunday off a huge Week 16 win over the Rams and with a 10 a.m. Pacific time kick at Carolina, but the Seahawks dominated, 27-10, for a sixth straight win. Zach Charbonnet rushed for 110 yards and two scores, but the defence was the story in holding the Panthers to 139 yards (40 passing) and just 10 first downs. The Seahawks have tied their franchise record with 13 wins in a season and made the Super Bowl in the previous two with 13 victories (2005, 2013). Sam Darnold has become just the fifth quarterback in history with consecutive 13-win seasons along with Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Brett Favre. Darnold, with the Vikings last season, definitely doesn’t belong in that group for much else. He is only the fourth signal-caller this century with at least 13 wins and a minimum of 20 giveaways as he leads the league with 20. No player since at least 1978 has led the NFL in turnovers while playing for a top-seeded playoff team. The Seahawks have committed 28 turnovers as a team, second most in the NFL. They are 13-1 SU in their past 14 road games.
San Francisco 49ers
The Niners were involved in one of the most entertaining, back-and-forth games of the season on Sunday, escaping visiting Chicago 42-38 when the Bears couldn’t convert from the San Francisco 2 on the game’s final play. It was the first regular-season game in league history tied at 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35. Brock Purdy threw for three scores and rushed for two, his second game with five total touchdowns. He’s only the seventh QB in NFL history with back-to-back games of at least five and first San Francisco one. The Niners have won six straight (6-0 ATS), all since Purdy returned from injury. They have two straight games scoring at least 40 for the first time since 1995. The 49ers were without two Pro Bowlers on Sunday in tight end George Kittle and left tackle Trent Williams and will need both for this one. Kittle didn’t play at all with an ankle and Williams, one of the greats at his position ever, injured his hamstring on the first play.
