Can Saints quarterback Tyler Shough make a second-year leap like Ravens quarterback and fellow Louisville alum Lamar Jackson did? Jackson was the last pick in the first round of the 2018 draft, had an inconsistent first rookie season and then was named league MVP in Year 2.
Shough was the No. 40 overall pick in 2025 and had an up-and-down rookie campaign but is clearly entrenched as the New Orleans starter going forward. He’s not winning league MVP in 2026, though. Sunday will mark the second all-time NFL matchup featuring quarterbacks from Louisville. The other was in 2021 between Jackson and Denver’s Teddy Bridgewater.
These franchises have met eight times, all in the regular season, with Baltimore leading 6-2. The last was in 2022 when the Ravens won 27-13 in the Big Easy. Jackson threw for a score and rushed for 82 yards. Andy Dalton was the Saints QB back then.
NFL Player Odds and Props
Ravens running back Derrick Henry should be on your anytime touchdown odds list pretty much every week. The future Hall of Famer rushed for three scores in Week 1. He now has 125 career rushing TDs, passing Hall of Famer Marcus Allen (123) for the third-most in NFL history.
I also like Saints QB Tyler Shough to throw a pick after two in Week 1. New Orleans probably gets down pretty big, and he has to throw plenty.
New Orleans Saints
New Orleans was a 7.5-point underdog in Detroit on Sunday and rallied from down 21-0 in the second half to force overtime. Second-year head coach Kellen Moore opted to try for the 2-point PAT when the Saints scored in OT to cut Detroit’s lead to 31-30, but it failed. Interesting decision by Moore on the road in Week 1. New Orleans also had a defensive touchdown wiped out by penalty early in the game. QB Tyler Shough threw for 410 yards and three scores but also two interceptions and a lost fumble. He joined Drew Brees as the only Saints QBs with a 400-yard game in Week 1. Chris Olave caught 10 of those passes for 182 yards. Former Pro Bowl running back Alvin Kamara was out injured and is questionable for this one.
Baltimore Ravens
Jesse Minter’s head coaching debut in Week 1 couldn’t have gone much better for Baltimore as the Ravens rolled 41-23 in Indianapolis. Minter became only the third head coach this century to see his team score at least 40 in his debut. The Ravens’ 506 total yards were third-most by a head coach in his debut in league history. And Minter is a defensive-minded guy. First-year offensive coordinator Declan Doyle opted to largely keep two-time league MVP Lamar Jackson under centre rather than in shotgun with Jackson under centre for 58 per cent of snaps, by far an NFL career high. He threw for 324 yards and a score while rushing for a touchdown. Derrick Henry rushed for 144 yards three touchdowns. It was Henry’s 26th career game with at least 100 yards rushing and two scores to pass Jim Brown and LaDainian Tomlinson for most all-time. About the only negative was No. 1 wideout Zay Flowers leaving with a hamstring injury after five catches for 150 yards and a TD. Flowers is day-to-day.
