NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
These teams haven’t met in the regular season since 2018, when New Orleans crushed Washington 43-19 in Week 5. Drew Brees (now retired) led the Saints with 363 passing yards and three touchdowns. Alex Smith (also retired) was under centre for Washington, finishing with 275 passing yards and an interception. The Saints are receiving almost 70 per cent of the betting action, with nearly 90 per cent of bettors taking the Over. Six straight games between these teams have gone above the number.
New Orleans has dominated in October, winning 15 of their last 16 games in the month. They’re 2-2 against the spread this season, but they’ve failed to cover in six of their last seven games against Washington. The total has gone Under in three of four games for the Saints this season and six of their last seven dating back to last year.
Washington hasn’t been great at FedEx Field, dropping four of their last five home games. They’ve only managed to cover once this year and they’re 2-5 ATS in their last seven games. The total has gone Over in three of four games for Washington in 2021.
New Orleans Saints
Expect the Saints to come out hard after their surprising loss to the Giants last week. New Orleans blew an 11-point fourth-quarter lead in their first game back in the Superdome since Hurricane Ida struck the city in August. Jameis Winston was 17-for-23, finishing with 226 passing yards and a touchdown. Swiss Army knife Taysom Hill was 2-for-3 passing, with nine yards and an interception. Hill also picked up two rushing touchdowns and 28 yards on six carries and 26 receiving yards on two catches.
The defence has been the biggest factor for New Orleans this season. They held the Packers to just three points in Week 1 and have allowed only 69 total points, which is top-5 in the NFL. Demario Davis leads the team with 22 total tackles, while Tanoh Kpassagnon leads in sacks (2) and Marcus Williams leads in interceptions (2).
Running back Tony Jones Jr. will miss at least three weeks after being placed on injured reserve. Jones had to be carted off the field last week due to an ankle injury.
Washington Football Team
Playing in his hometown of Atlanta last week, Taylor Heinicke’s late-game heroics made the difference for Washington. Heinicke’s 30-yard touchdown pass to J.D. McKissic with 33 seconds remaining in the game sealed the win. Heinicke was 23-for-33 in the game, finishing with 290 passing yards and three touchdowns. McKissic finished with 44 receiving yards and a touchdown. Terry McLaurin led all receivers with a game-high 123 yards and two touchdowns.
Washington left Atlanta with a win, but it definitely cost them physically. Tight end Logan Thomas (hamstring), offensive guard Brandon Scherff (knee), linebacker Jon Bostic (chest) and wide receiver Cam Sims (hamstring) all left the game early with injuries. Thomas will miss at least three weeks after being placed on injured reserve and Scherff is expected to be out at least two weeks. Bostic is likely done for the season with a pectoral injury. There’s been no update on Sims.
