It’s rare to see a total as low as 36 – but that’s what happens when you match two journeyman quarterbacks in Josh Johnson and Cody Kessler against one another.

Two teams facing daunting quarterback situations face off in Northern Florida on Sunday as the Jacksonville Jaguars look to end Washington’s playoff hopes. The Jaguars have already been eliminated from post-season contention and will likely ride out the last three weeks of the season with Cody Kessler under centre. Meanwhile, Washington’s slim playoff hopes will rest on the right shoulder of Josh Johnson, who only signed with the team Dec. 4.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Jaguars are considerable favourites against a Washington team that was forced to go to its fourth quarterback following season-ending injuries to Alex Smith and Colt McCoy and stunning inefficiency from Mark Sanchez. And while Jacksonville has gone just 3-7 ATS in its past 10 games as a home fave of seven or more points, it should be a popular play after allowing an average of 15 points in seven games at TIAA Bank Field this season.

It’s rare to see a total as low as 36 – but that’s what happens when you match two journeyman quarterbacks in Johnson and Kessler against one another. Washington comes in having gone 6-2 to the under in its past eight road games, while going below the number in seven of nine against teams below .500. Jacksonville has converted the under in four consecutive home games and is 4-9 O/U in its last 13 following a straight-up loss.

Washington Redskins

Washington was sitting pretty at 6-3, but major defensive struggles and freak injuries have left the team with just an 11 percent chance of reaching the post-season, per FiveThirtyEight. It has allowed more than 30 points per game over the course of their four-game losing skid – and with the team’s No. 4 quarterback now under centre, combined with the Jags’ suffocating home defence, a similar showing this weekend could spell doom for their playoff hopes.

Jacksonville Jaguars

While we’ve established that the Jaguars might not need many points to prevail, the question is: Can they still manage it? Jacksonville has scored in single digits in four of its previous eight games, and has produced just 15 total points in their past two. The key to victory here could be the performance of running back Leonard Fournette, who is averaging just 3.4 yards per carry but could feast on a Washington defence surrendering 4.5 yards per attempt.
