It looks to be one of the mismatches of the NFL season on Sunday in Week 4 as the powerhouse (and probably angry) Baltimore Ravens make a short trip in the state of Maryland to face the Washington Football Team. The Ravens are 13.5-point favourites on the NFL odds with a total of 51.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Some handicappers don’t believe in trap/letdown games, but this sure looks like one for the Ravens. They should absolutely blow out a Washington team that might have only a couple of players who would start for the Ravens. However, Baltimore is on a short week and off the AFC Game of the Year on Monday night vs. Kansas City. It would be human nature to perhaps be a bit flat at least early in this one.

Other than the Chargers and Rams playing one another in their shared Los Angeles stadium or the Jets and Giants playing facing off in their shared New Jersey stadium, this is the shortest possible road trip in the NFL as downtown Baltimore is 35 miles or so from FedExField in Landover. If the stadium were allowed to be full, it would be a majority of Ravens fans on Sunday.

Washington has won and covered the past two in the series. They last met Week 5 in Charm City four years ago and the then-Redskins won 16-10 when current star Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson was winning a Heisman Trophy at Louisville. Joe Flacco was still the Ravens’ QB then and threw for 210 yards and a TD. Washington’s Kirk Cousins (now with Minnesota) threw for 260 and a score. The big play was an 85-yard punt return for a score by Washington’s Jamison Crowder (now with Jets).

The favourite is 4-1 ATS in the past five meetings. The under is 4-1 in those five.

Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore had been right there with the Chiefs as Super Bowl favourites, but the Ravens’ franchise-record 14-game regular-season winning streak came to a crashing halt Monday in a 34-20 home defeat to Kansas City. Jackson of course is the reigning league MVP, but he wasn’t in the same league as Patrick Mahomes on Monday as Mahomes totaled five TDs and Jackson just one with a scant 97 yards passing. Jackson missed a wide-open Marquise Brown for a potential touchdown. Jackson is now 0-3 in his NFL career as a starting quarterback against Kansas City and 21-1 against the rest of the NFL. The Ravens’ defence hadn’t allowed more than 21 points in 13 straight games. After Monday’s game, Jackson called the Chiefs his team’s “Kryptonite.” Baltimore is 15-5-1 ATS in its past 21 road games.

Washington Football Team

Washington was a surprise Week 1 home winner vs. Philadelphia but has been outclassed in back-to-back road games, leading many to question whether young QB Dwayne Haskins is the answer under centre. Head Coach Ron Rivera isn’t pulling him yet but also hinted it could be coming as “there is a cutoff point for me” if Haskins continues to struggle. He had three picks in Sunday’s 34-20 loss in Cleveland. Kyle Allen is listed as the backup.

Washington’s defensive line suffered two injuries in the loss with Defensive Rookie of the Year favourite Chase Young leaving with a groin (it’s not believed to be serious, but the No. 2 overall pick could well miss this one) and tackle Matt Ioannidis suffering a torn biceps. He will miss the rest of the season. Washington is 3-7 ATS in its past 10 as a home dog.
