Rams vs. Packers Point Spread: NFL Week 9 Odds, Prediction

Sean McVay’s Los Angeles squad was chewed up by the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8, losing 43-20 and potentially losing QB Matthew Stafford for some time due to a thumb injury. Over in Wisconsin, the Packers discovered that games against the Vikings with Jordan Love aren’t the same as those with Aaron Rodgers. Losing 24-10.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Los Angeles Rams heading into Lambeau Field is like lambs to the slaughter in the lions’ den. The last time the L.A. franchise won on the road against the Packers…they weren’t the Los Angeles Rams but rather the St. Louis Rams back in 2006. Green Bay has captured eight of the last ten meetings, which includes a 2021 Division Round match at Lambeau, which happened to be the last time QB Jared Goff suited up in blue and yellow.

While the Rams’ 3-5 record in the NFC West doesn’t impress much, betters can find solace in the club’s 4-3-1 efforts ATS. That said, they’ve failed to handle the spread in three of the four most recent contests, including twice in a row. This is not a team engaged in many shootouts, as the over is only 3-5 this season.

So far things aren’t great in the Jordan Love era. Not only is Green Bay languishing at 2-5 in the NFC North, but they’ve only fared 3-4 ATS. Worse, they began the season brightly with a 3-0 record. They have failed to cover four straight spreads, each one a game in which they were deemed slight underdogs.

Los Angeles Rams

Games like Week 8 in Dallas are the kind when you wonder if the team even needs to watch any tape. There are bad performances where some study time can help clean up mistakes, and there are bad performances one just wants to forget and never be reminded of again.

What didn’t go wrong against the Cowboys in the 43-20 defeat? Matthew Stafford needs evaluating to discern if his thumb is okay. The Rams gave up multiple touchdowns on defence, a touchdown when on offence (pick six), provided the Cowboys with excellent field positioning courtesy of porous punt return blocking, and conceded a safety when a blocked punt of their own bounced out of the back of the end zone. Oh, and it was 33-3 at the break. The funny thing (or not funny at all) is that Dallas “only” had 387 total yards yet scored 43 points. Everything went wrong for L.A. This is a very average defensive unit with middle-of-the-pack numbers in all the major statistical categories. If the offence can’t get going, they don’t win games. Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp were largely invisible.

WR Puka Nacua (knee) is questionable.

Green Bay Packers

Are things much better in Green Bay? It’s honestly hard to say. At the very least, Packers faithful can argue that Jordan Love is young and has time to improve. That said, it doesn’t look great so far.

Something that almost never happens is a Vikings-at-Packers matchup for which not many people think the hosts will win. That was the set up on Sunday afternoon and Green Bay obliged the pundits’ predictions with a moribund performance and a 24-10 loss. The Love-led Packers are one of the worst first half teams in the NFL. It seems every week they’re shut out or have a field or two when the sides return to the dressing rooms at halftime. In Week 8 it was one field goal. They eventually scored a TD late in the third quarter with a genuinely nice pass from Love to Romeo Doubs in the end zone from one yard out, but that was it. The Vikings defence has greatly improved in recent weeks after a horrendous start to the season and they made life a living hell for the Packers offence.

OT Josh Nijman (foot) is questionable.
