The Rams are defending NFC champions but the only way they can get a Wild-Card spot now is to win out and have the Vikings lose their final two games
The last of three Saturday games in Week 16 is also the final Saturday matchup of the 2019 regular season (there will be a few in the playoffs) as the Los Angeles Rams visit the San Francisco 49ers in an important NFC West matchup.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
The Rams are two-time NFC West champions, but they will relinquish that title this season to these 49ers or else the Seattle Seahawks. It could be decided in Week 17 when San Francisco visits Seattle. San Francisco, which has clinched at least a Wild-Card spot, hasn’t won the West since 2012.
The 49ers go for the season sweep as they beat the host Rams 20-7 in Week 6, Los Angeles’ third loss in a row at the time. San Francisco’s defence is one of the NFL’s best and that was on display after the Rams scored a touchdown on their opening possession. They obviously didn’t score again and finished with just 157 total yards. Jared Goff looked overwhelmed, sacked four times and completing 13 of 24 for a career-low 78 yards. The Rams didn’t have a completion longer than 12 yards while going 0 for 9 on third down and 0 for 4 on fourth down. Didn’t help that star running back Todd Gurley was out with a bruised thigh.
Jimmy Garoppolo passed for 243 yards and ran for a touchdown for the Niners. Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle caught eight balls for 103 yards. San Francisco didn’t score a TD in the final 27 minutes, settling for two Robbie Gould field goals.
The Rams are 2-6 against the spread (ATS) in the past eight meetings. The under is 5-1 in the previous six at the 49ers.
Los Angeles Rams
The Rams are defending conference champions but the only way they can get a Wild-Card spot now is to win out and have the Minnesota Vikings lose their final two games. The Vikings are home to Green Bay on Monday in Week 16 and home to a nothing-to-play for Bears team in Week 17. Los Angeles was a short favourite in Dallas in Week 15 but was routed 44-21. The Rams were outgained 475-289. They rushed for 3 yards in the first half and finished with a total of 22 rushing yards. Starting cornerback Troy Hill injured his thumb and will have surgery this week yet still might play Saturday. The Rams are 5-1 ATS in their past six vs. the NFC West.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers are in the playoffs, but they come off a shocking 29-22 home loss to a bad Falcons team. Atlanta went ahead on a 5-yard TD pass from Matt Ryan to Julio Jones with two seconds left. Then, probably the worst “bad beat” of the season happened on the total, which was set at 50. On the ensuing kickoff, the Niners tried a trick play, but it would end up being recovered in the end zone by Atlanta and that 29-22 final. The 49ers became the first team to win 10 games in a season and also lose at least three games in the final 10 seconds of regulation or overtime since the 2000 Philadelphia Eagles. San Francisco would still be the West champion and conference’s top seed by winning out. Right now, though, it would be a Wild-Card team. The Niners are 7-18-1 ATS in their past 26 as favourites.
