The Washington Football Team will clinch the NFC East with a win over the Panthers and a New York Giants loss to Baltimore.

Washington has a great chance to clinch the division this week and there’s probably no other team head coach Ron Rivera would like to do it against than the Carolina Panthers. He was on their sideline as for nine years before being fired last December. Washington comes into this game as a 2.5-point favourite on the NFL odds with a total of 44.5.

NFL Week 16 Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Mired in the midst of a three-game losing streak, the Panthers are actually 6-0 ATS in their last six road games.  Carolina, however, has struggled to put points up in Washington.  The under is 5-0 in the last five meetings between these teams in Washington.

Winners of three of their last four games, Washington is also 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.  In the last 10 meetings between these teams the underdog is 8-2 ATS.

Carolina Panthers

Carolina never seemed to be able to click as a team throughout this season and will miss the playoffs for a third straight year.  Outside of D.J. Moore, the Panthers couldn’t muster much offence in their 24-16 loss to the Packers, last week.  Moore picked up 131 receiving yards on just six receptions to put him over 1,000 yards on the season, while Teddy Bridgewater threw for 258 yards, but no TDs.  Bridgewater did pick up a rushing TD, but was also sacked three times.

The Panthers rush defence was picked apart by Green Bay running back Aaron Jones, who lit up Carolina for 145 rushing yards.  The Panthers ultimately allowed 195 rushing yards and two TDs to the Packers.  However, the secondary was effective.  They managed to hold Aaron Rodgers to fewer than 150 passing yards and sacked the normally elusive QB five times.

Washington Football Team

Washington fans shouldn’t get too far ahead of themselves, but they may be cautiously optimistic about the playoffs, despite the 20-15 loss to the Seahawks.  Before that loss, Washington was rolling with three straight wins and had it not been for Dwayne Haskins getting sacked back-to-back times on the final drive, they may have beat Seattle.  Haskins was ultimately sacked four times in the game and gave up two interceptions.  Alex Smith is still questionable, but there is no doubt if he is able to start, he’ll get the nod over Haskins.

With the offence suffering significant injury losses all season, it has been Washington’s defence that has put them in a position for a playoff berth.  They’re holding opponents to an average of 200.2 passing yards per game, including holding Russell Wilson to 121 yards, last week.  They have also picked up 40 sacks and have been terrorizing QBs all year.
