Packers vs. Lions Point Spread: NFL Week 9 Odds, Prediction
The 3-5 Packers have dropped four straight, fielding an offence that is 26th in the NFL with 18.1 points per game even with back-to-back MVP Aaron Rodgers under centre. Green Bay fell 27-17 at Buffalo last Sunday night.
Detroit’s offence found its rhythm again but unfortunately for the Lions their league-worst defence failed them again in last Sunday’s 31-27 loss to Miami. Detroit’s the lone NFL team surrendering 420 yards per game.
Kickoff at Ford Field starts at 1 p.m. EDT, with Green Bay favoured by three points on the road and the over-under pegged at 49 on the NFL odds.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Indoor games in Detroit have been cashing overs tickets all season long. The over is 4-0 in Detroit’s four home outings so far with the four games averaging 71.5 total points. The Lions have scored at least 36 points in two of their outings, and their opponent at least 38 twice.
Head-to-head, it’s the Lions who have the edge over Green Bay. Detroit is 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 contests with the Packers and 5-0 ATS in their last five hosting Green Bay. The over is also 9-4 in these clubs most recent 13 meetings. These teams split their two meetings a season ago, with the home team winning each game and scoring at least 35 points.
Green Bay Packers
Despite the double-digit loss up in Buffalo Sunday evening, Green Bay might have found a future recipe for success: keep the ball on the ground. The Packers actually produced more yards than the Buffalo in the loss, and 208 of Green Bay’s 398 came via the run. Aaron Jones led the way with 20 carries for 143 yards, and A.J. Dillon got his fair share with 10 touches for 54 rushing yards.
Green Bay’s rushing the ball 24.9 times a game, but perhaps they look to increase that number to above 30 against the league’s third-worst run defence in Detroit. Aaron Rodgers also didn’t crack over 30 pass attempts for the second time this season, but still managed two touchdown passes on calculated shots against Buffalo.
Detroit Lions
The Lions surrendered another 476 yards and 31 points in last weekend’s loss to Miami, Detroit’s fifth straight defeat. Detroit also held a 10-point lead at the half before going scoreless in the final 30 minutes of action. Running back D’Andre Swift returned from shoulder and ankle injuries but only received 10 touches for 33 yards and is still apparently not 100%. Jamaal Williams got the majority of reps at running back, scoring two touchdowns last weekend.
Detroit also dealt leading receiver T.J. Hockenson for a pair of draft picks. The tight end had 395 yards on the season, but a healthy Amon-Ra St. Brown should soon takeover as Detroit’s top pass-catching option.
