NFL Week 9 Monday Morning GIF BLITZ!
If you’re a fan of back up quarterbacks and great special teams play, week 9 was all about you. We saw the return of Mark “Sanchize” Sanchez who led the Eagles to a win over the Texans. Cowboys’ backup Brandon Weeden reminded us all why he’s not a starting QB with a lackluster performance against the Cardinals and Rams QB Austin Davis continued his unlikely season by doing just enough to keep St. Louis afloat against the 49ers. Plus, blocked punts and field goals. Lots of ’em.

Here we have Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy simply placing Browns center Nick McDonald on his behind and gently tackling Brian Hoyer for a sack. McCoy is a bad man. It didn’t matter, though, as the Bucs managed to keep their incompetence intact losing to the Browns 17-22. Despite a 1-7 record, McCoy just signed a $98 millon, seven year contract to continue eating offensive linemen for Tampa Bay.
Is there a “Get Well” card available for getting beaten that badly? If so, send one to McDonald now.
Speaking of incompetence, the Jets are finding new ways to define the term. Here’s Chiefs QB Alex Smith throwing right into the hands of Calvin Pace, which would normally be a positive play for the Jets. Instead, tight end Anthony Fasano manages to catch the ball while on the ground and squirm in for the touchdown. The Chiefs would go on to win 10-24, keeping the Jet losing streak alive at eight games.
EXACTLY how the Chiefs drew this play up. Exactly.
Beast Mode is rarely contained and the Raiders were the latest victim. Despite keeping pace with the Seahawks, the Raiders were unable to stop Marshawn Lynch, who dragged most of the defense and some of the offense into the endzone on his way to a hard earned touchdown. The Seahawks would hold on for the win 24-30.
Charles Woodson did a nice job of wrapping up that tackle. Too bad it was his own linebacker.
It looks like Mark Sanchez is ready to put the infamous butt fumble behind him. Sanchez came in for Nick Foles after Foles left with a collarbone injury. Here’s Sanchez’ first pass, which was a 50 yard bomb to Jeremy Maclin. Sanchez would lead the Eagles to a 31-21 victory over the struggling Texans.
This throw easily secured at least five more years of being a backup QB for Sanchez.
For some reason, the Patriots are in Peyton Manning’s head and always have been. Despite racking up over 400 yards passing, Manning was unable to lead the Broncos past New England. Maybe it’s because Gronk is out here making plays like this against one of the best defenses in the league. Tom Brady was able to pick apart Denver’s defense en route to a 43-21 blowout. We’ll likely see these two playing at the Meadowlands come playoff time.
GO GO Gadget Arms! Seriously, how does Gronkowski even catch this ball?
Former Brazilian soccer player turned NFL placekicker Cairo Santos employed some old habits trying to stop Jets return man Percy Harvin. Santos was rightfully flagged on the play, but saved the touchdown for the Chiefs. The Chiefs would go on to beat the Jets 10-24.
RED CARD.
If your offense stinks, sometimes it’s better to rely on your special teams to score points for you. The Raiders should continue to stress special teams since it’s what kept them in the game against the defending champion Seahawks yesterday. Despite a strong effort, the Raiders lost 24-30.
I think I count five different fumbles on this play after the punt is blocked before it’s finally recovered. That’s so Raiders.
Browns defensive tackle Billy Winn found a new way to block kicks; hurdle the line entirely. The league made “vaulting” assisted by teammates illegal a few years back, but Winn appears to completely jump over the offensive line without any assistance. The Browns didn’t need much assistance to put the Bucs away 22-17.
Apparently, parkour is now on the list of activities encouraged by NFL coaches.
The Cardinals are quietly having a great year, holding the best record in the league. Brandon Weeden threw two costly interceptions for the Cowboys against a defense that leaves little room for mistakes. The game could have gotten a bit more out of hand on this blocked field goal attempt at the end of the first half, but tight end Jason Witten was able to chase defensive back Patrick Peterson before he got to the end zone. The Cardinals went on to win 28-17.
Watching kickers chase a return is like watching children run through a forest of giants.
Rams linebacker Daren Bates channeled his inner Billy Winn as he tries to time his jump over the 49ers offensive line to block a field goal attempt but is juuussst a bit offsides. The Rams defense hounded the 49ers and QB Colin Kaepernick all day, recording eight sacks and a 13-10 win.
Launch code sequence was just a bit premature.
