NFL Odds & Predictions: Which Team Will Sign Cam Newton?
The Carolina Panthers officially said good bye to former NFL MVP Cam Newton after failing to trade the soon-to-be 31 year old Quarterback. The writing was on the wall when rumours started circulating during the season and continued when the team made a head coaching change bringing in college star Matt Rhule. It was then solidified when the team inked Teddy Bridgewater to a three-year, 63 million dollar contract earlier in the month.
ESPN is reported that Newton had a physical in Atlanta in March co-ordinated by the Panthers and his agency. Newton passed the physical and is healthy with both his shoulder and foot checking out well and he is hungrier than ever and eager for the next opportunity.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers offer arguably the best landing spot – talent wise – and are missing a starting Quarterback. For the first time since the 2003 season, Phillip Rivers will not be wearing a Chargers jersey. Los Angeles checks in as the favourites at +175 to sign Cam Newton. Consider a receiving core that includes Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Hunter Henry. Also Running back Austin Ekeler has proven to be a very reliable back. The Chargers currently have Tyrod Taylor listed as their starter.
New England
With Tom Brady now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Patriots currently have Brian Hoyer, rookie Jarrett Stidham and journeyman Cody Kessler on the depth chart. You have to think Head Coach Bill Belichick would like to improve that part of his roster before the season begins. The Pats opened at +800 to sign Newton, but that number has dropped to +400.
Washington
Washington seemed to be the new destination many insiders are circling for Newton. They opened as favourites to land the former Auburn star, but now sit at +1000 to land the pivot, and that move could happen quickly. Panthers Head Coach Ron Rivera, who has that same title in DC, spent plenty of time with Newton in Carolina. Rivera has an excellent relationship with Newton and watched his Quarterback put up some outstanding numbers during his Panthers era. Ironically, the team traded for Newton’s back Kyle Allen just days ago. Could Rivera have a Quarterback depth chart of Newton, Dwayne Haskins and Allen?
Buffalo Bills
The Bills sat at +4500 and were a massive long shot to sign Newton, but today currently sit at +1200 to sign the veteran. Let me make the argument for the team from Western New York. Josh Allen is the starting Quarterback on the roster, and he has struggled at times, especially during last year’s playoff matchup with the Texans. Imagine Newton in that situation and around an improved talent base on offence that now includes Stefon Diggs?
Perhaps Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott, who spent time in Carolina as the team’s defensive co-ordinator and Bills General Manager Brandon Beane, who was the Panthers Director of Operators and Assistant General Manager the entire time Newton was a Panther have had that conversation. If anyone has all the background information on Newton, it’s definitely the Bills.
