NFL 2010 Preview: New York Jets

The New York Jets have loaded up for 2010 and only one result will do. It’s Super Bowl or bust for Rex Ryan’s team according to Al Dannity.

Off-season changes
After over-achieving in the playoffs last year, the Jets made quick moves to bolster their line-up. Santonio Holmes was acquired from Pittsburgh for just a fifth round pick. LaDainian Tomlinson moved cross-country to improve his chances of going to the Super Bowl. Antonio Cromartie also left the Chargers to hook up with the Jets. Even Jason Taylor has gotten on board for one last shot at a championship. The Jets made it to the AFC Championship game without these signings; these moves could push them over the top.

All of these new arrivals left the Jets with little wriggle room in the draft. New York appears to have drafted at least one bona fide starter however in Kyle Wilson. The corner will line up opposite Darrelle Revis. That is of course on the assumption that Revis and the Jets end their contract war. At the time of publication Revis was still holding out but a deal appeared imminent. NFL betting fans should closely follow how these negotiations progress.

Just like with our previews of the Dolphins and Patriots, the four games against New England and Miami leap off the schedule as big games. The Jets face the Patriots in weeks 2 and 13 and take on Miami in weeks 3 and 14. These divisional games should decide who wins the AFC East title.

Outside of divisional play, the Jets face a testing schedule. New York opens the season at home to Baltimore. The Jets will also welcome Minnesota, Green Bay, Cincinnati, and Houston to New Meadowlands Stadium in 2010. New York’s road schedule is more appealing, with only a road trip to Pittsburgh in week 15 looking particularly daunting.

The verdict
Believe the hype. Actually scratch that, believe most of the hype. This Jets team is far from invincible and will need Darrelle Revis to be present in order to succeed. While the big talk coming out of New York will annoy plenty of fans, most of it is justified. This team is loaded and should hit double digits with relative ease. While the schedule is less than favorable, most of the Jets’ toughest games come at home. That’s why I like the Jets to make a statement in 2010, at least in the regular season, and go either 11-5 or 12-4.
