Ironically, both titles belong to the 1-3 Lions who are both scoring and allowing 35 points a game. And last week’s 48-45 loss hosting Seattle was the epitome of their 2022–23 season so far.

One thing’s for certain, if third-string rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe starts for New England in Week 5 — Detroit’s defence cannot afford to give up their season averages. Zappe was thrown into the fire last weekend at Lambeau Field after Mac Jones (ankle) didn’t dress and backup Brian Hoyer (head) left the game. But Jones was a limited participant Wednesday and could come back under centre early.

Kickoff Sunday at Gillette Stadium starts at 1 p.m. EDT with the Patriots three-point favourites at home and the over-under at 46 on the NFL odds.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

To no surprise, the over is 4-0 in Lions games this season. Detroit’s also 3-1 against the spread despite having the opposite record straight up. New England failed to cover in their lone home game, and it went over the total — so the trend says take the over and the points with Detroit.

Dating back further, New England is 2-6-1 ATS in their last nine outings. But some about the thing NFC, and in particular the NFC North brings out the Patriots’ best. New England’s covered in four of their last five in contests versus the conference and are 16-3 outright in their last 19 versus the NFC North.

Detroit Lions

Detroit’s 45-point performance in Week 4 was even more impressive considering it was achieved without all of running back D’Andre Swift and receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and DJ Chark. None of the three practised Wednesday, and tight end T.J. Hockenson (hip) and receiver Josh Reynolds (ankle) joined the did not practise list for a total of five playmakers injured.

Running back Jamaal Williams stepped up in Swift’s absence last week, rushing for 108 yards and two scores on 19 carries. Jared Goff passed for 387 yards and four touchdowns in the loss, his second four-touchdown outing this season.

But most of that has been all for not, as Detroit has allowed at least 28 points in all three of their losses and rank dead last in yards per game allowed with 444.8 so far.

New England Patriots

New England gave it their best fight with Zappe but fell 27-24 in overtime to drop to 1-3. In relief duty, the 2022 fourth-round pick completed 10 passes for 99 yards and hit DeVante Parker for a 25-yard touchdown. The Patriots’ game plan again revolved around the ground game, with Damien Harris, Rhamondre Stevenson, and Kendrick Bourne combining for 167 yards on 33 carries against Green Bay.

New England has yet to declare a starting quarterback for Week 5, but it looks like it’ll be Zappe unless Jones can tough it out and play. Hoyer didn’t practise Wednesday with a concussion, while Jones was limited. Receiver Jakobi Meyers (knee) was limited while tight end Jonnu Smith (ankle) is now week-to-week.
