The Jacksonville Jaguars need more consistency from fifth-year quarterback Blake Bortles. They could be in for another defensive battle this week against the Jets.

The Jacksonville Jaguars looked like one of the teams to beat in the first two weeks of the season before stumbling in a 9-6 loss to the Tennessee Titans in Week 3. They can’t afford another letdown when they host the New York Jets on Sunday. Jacksonville took down the New York Giants and New England Patriots in back-to-back weeks before putting forth a flat effort in a key divisional game. The return of running back Leonard Fournette should help provide a spark. However, the Jets will have had 10 days to prepare for this game, so the Jags better not overlook them.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Jacksonville is 7-1 straight up in its last eight home games. The Jaguars had covered the spread in four straight games before last week’s loss to Tennessee. The Jaguars have earned their two wins this season by an average margin of 8.0 points. Jacksonville will be a 7.5-point favorite against the Jets on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Jets have dropped each of their last two games while failing to cover the spread in either of them. New York is 4-1 straight up in its last five games against the Jaguars but will be in tough to beat them on the road in this one. The under has hit in four of the Jets’ last five games dating back to last season – it wouldn’t be a surprise if this is another low scoring game with the total set at 38 points.

New York Jets

The Jets couldn’t have asked for a better start to the Darnold era than a 48-17 win in Detroit. However, Gang Green has come crashing back down to earth ever since with back-to-back losses to Miami and Cleveland. Darnold was held to 15-of-31 for 169 yards and two interceptions against the Browns. It’s hard to imagine the rookie passer faring much better against the Jaguars in Week 4. Meanwhile, New York struggled to move the ball on the ground versus Cleveland with Bilal Powell and Isaiah Crowell combining to average just 3.6 yards per carry. The Jets want to establish the run early in games to take the pressure off of Darnold, but that won’t be any easier to do versus Jacksonville. The biggest bright spot for New York so far has been a defence that ranks 10th in the NFL with an average of 19.3 points allowed per game this season. The Titans and their defence gave the Jets a blueprint on how to win in Jacksonville. If the Jets are going to have any shot at keeping this game close, they will need their defence to step up big time on Sunday.

Jacksonville Jaguars

One week after scoring 31 points against the Patriots, the Jaguars couldn’t find the end zone in an ugly offensive outing against the Titans. Blake Bortles was held to 21-of-34 for 155 yards and was sacked three times. Meanwhile, T.J. Yeldon, Corey Grant and Brandon Wilds combined for 60 rushing yards on 14 carries. The potential return of Fournette will make the Jacksonville offence a little more difficult to slow down, but ultimately Bortles needs to be better. The fifth-year starter has been hot and cold through the first three weeks of the season. As is the case with Darnold, Bortles needs a consistent rushing attack to help take the pressure off him and the passing game. The good news for the Jaguars is that their defence has looked absolutely dominant out of the gate, ranking second in the NFL with an average of 14.7 points per game allowed. And this week, they get to feast on a rookie who has been mistake-prone.
