Jets vs. Chiefs Point Spread: NFL Week 8 Odds, Prediction

After being released by the Jets in Week 5, Le’Veon Bell gets a shot at his former team when the New York Jets head to K.C. to face the Chiefs.

Bell’s first touch for the Chiefs, last week, was a 16-yard rush, something he only managed to do once for the Jets.  This game is one of the biggest spreads in recent NFL history as the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs (6-1) come into this game against the winless Jets (0-7) as 19.5-point favourites. Oddsmakers actually had the spread at 21.5 at the open. The total is holding at 49.

NFL Week 8 Point Spread and Betting Analysis

With one of the best offences in the league, the Chiefs have been able to put up points on the board and are 5-2 against the spread (ATS) this season and 8-1-1 ATS in their last 10 home games.  The under is 8-1 in K.C.’s last nine home games as a favourite of 10.5 or more.

It’s been a miserable season for the Jets, with New York going 1-6 ATS through their first seven games.  They are also 2-6 ATS in their last eight games against Kansas City and the under is 4-0 in their last four games as an underdog.

These teams last met in Week 13 of the 2017 season, with the Jets walking away with a 38-31 road victory.  The home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four games between these teams.

New York Jets

As the last winless team in the league, it’s probably an understatement to say this season hasn’t gone the way the Jets wanted.  New York is coming off an 18-10 home loss last week to the AFC East leading Buffalo Bills.  Jets quarterback Sam Darnold continues to struggle, only managing 120 passing yards with no TDs and two interceptions against the Bills.  That brings Darnold’s career numbers to 39 TDs and 34 interceptions.

You can pick any stat you like to try and explain how the Jets have managed to lose the first seven games of the season, but it seems like they just can’t do anything right.  The most telling number is 118.  That’s the number of points they have been outscored by this year, 51 points more than the next team on the list.  New York is 24th in points allowed, only keeping opponents under 20 points once this season and they average just 12 points per game.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs continued their winning ways in a 43-16 road win over the Broncos, last week. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 200 yards and a TD, while rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire added to his strong season with another TD. Edwards-Helaire has helped K.C. rank sixth in rushing offence, this year.  After being released by the Jets and signed by the Chiefs in Week 5, Kansas City has been easing Le’Veon Bell into the offence, with Bell only getting six touches last week. Expect coach Andy Reid to put the ball in Bell’s hands more against his former team.

The Chiefs have been dominant on offence, this year.  K.C. scores on 51.4 per cent of their drives and hasn’t scored less than 23 points in a game.  Their weakest spot is defence, which is ranked 23rd in yards allowed, giving up 40 points to the Raiders in the Chiefs’ one loss of the season.  The defence does, however, only allow 20.4 points per game, eighth in the league and is stopping 58.3 per cent of third down conversions.
