NFL Betting Odds, Point Spread, Trends
It’s a matchup of former No. 1 overall picks who won national championships in college in Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow (at LSU) and Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence (at Clemson). Lawrence had one of the great college careers of any modern-day QB but didn’t win a Heisman Trophy. Burrow did.
The Jaguars are defending AFC South champions and look like the class of that division in the early going so they should return to the postseason. The Bengals and Ravens might be the class of the AFC North. If Cincinnati misses the playoffs a fourth straight season, no chance that coach Zac Taylor returns in 2027 as he entered the campaign on one of the league’s hottest seats. But so far, pretty good.
The all-time series between the franchises is tied 13-all, and they have never faced off in the postseason. The last meeting was Week 2 last year in Cincinnati, and the Bengals won 31-27 – their fourth straight victory in the series. That despite Burrow leaving with an injury in the first half and not returning. Backup Jake Browning led the comeback victory, scoring the go-ahead TD on a sneak in the final seconds. Lawrence completed 25 of 43 passes for 294 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.
NFL Player Odds and Props
The Jaguars have one clear goal-line back and that’s Bhayshul Tuten, so I like him for an anytime touchdown Sunday. He has rushed for two scores thus far – including Sunday. For the Bengals, take superstar wideout Ja’Marr Chase for an anytime TD – boy, I hope we see him matched up against Jags cornerback and ex-Heisman winner Travis Hunter. Chase didn’t find the end zone in Week 1 but has three scores the past two weeks. The Bengals likely won’t be able to run much Sunday so a lot of passing.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Perhaps no team has played a better all-around game through three weeks this NFL season than the Jaguars did Sunday in just embarrassing the defending AFC champion Patriots, 35-6. But then the Jags have been trucking everyone at home in a six-game winning streak there. They lost their lone roadie this year Week 2 in Denver (no shame in that). QB Trevor Lawrence has looked really good so far and had three TD throws in the win to pass Mark Brunell for most games with at least three franchise history (13). Former Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter had perhaps his biggest moment as a pro with his first interception, the first turnover forced in his pro career, but he’s still barely contributing offensively. Hunter has played 16 snaps on offence and has one catch and one carry. Remember he was also a superstar receiver at Colorado.
Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals played quite the back-and-forth AFC North game Sunday in Pittsburgh, losing a wild 30-27 affair when Joe Burrow was sacked and lost a fumble in the final minute at the Cincinnati 49. His team was almost in field-goal range pre-sack. The Bengals were trying to start 3-0 for the first time since 2015. Their defence had looked much, much better the first two weeks thanks to some offseason additions but allowed 411 yards to a mediocre Pittsburgh offence that failed to score a TD in Week 2, and Aaron Rodgers looked better than Burrow did Sunday. Special teams also was a major issue for the Bengals with a roughing-the-kicker penalty that extended a drive culminating in a Pittsburgh TD and a muffed punt recovered by the Steelers. That recovered fumble led to the game-wining field goal with 2:15 remaining.
