Giants vs. Eagles Point Spread: NFL Week 8 Odds, Prediction
The 2-5 Giants pulled off one of the upsets of the NFL season so far when they doubled up the 5-2 Eagles to start off Week 6, winning 34-17.
The vibes in New York have since descended after a complete collapse in Denver last weekend. New York blew a 19-0 fourth quarter lead and miraculously allowed 33 points in the final quarter, falling 33-32 to Denver. Philadelphia’s since bounced back with a 28-22 victory at Minnesota last week. So as they say, water always find its level and this case it’s the Eagles leading the NFC East, and the Giants at the bottom of the division. But as we’ve learned the two weeks ago, anything can happen in the NFL — especially with these two franchises.
Kickoff at Lincoln Financial Field goes at 1 p.m. EDT with the Eagles favoured by a touchdown on home field, and the over-under at 43.5 on the NFL odds.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
Philadelphia is riding a 12-game home win streak over the Giants, and a 13-1 run at home overall. Winning in Philadelphia is near impossible as of late for anyone, never mind for a Giants team that enters this week with nine consecutive road losses. Four of those nine road losses have come this season, with the most recent one in improbable fashion last week at Denver.
The over hit when these two teams faced off two weeks ago, and there’s plenty of reason to believe that trend will keep up this weekend. Philadelphia’s hit 28 points in three of their last five outings and have seen four of their last six divisional bouts finish over the total. New York allowed 33 points in the fourth quarter alone last week, while a rejuvenated offence under QB Jaxson Dart is averaging 26.7 points per game this month.
New York Giants
The Giants have found a scapegoat for last Sunday’s devastating loss: kicker Jude McAtamney. New York waived McAtamney after he missed two extra points, one of which that kept it a two-point Giants lead which they ended up losing. Veteran kickers Younghoe Koo and Graham Gano are on New York’s roster and could be the replacement in Week 8 and moving forward.
On the positive side, Jaxson Dart got some more valuable experience last week. Dart threw for a career-best 283 yards and three touchdowns in the loss, albeit a big chunk of that production came on a lucky 41-yard TD to Theo Johnson that bounced off a different intended target. New York’s ground attack also got a boost from Tyrone Tracy Jr., who finished with 46 yards and a touchdown. Tracy Jr. started the season ahead of Cam Skattebo, who has since became RB1.
The Giants also lost two key defenders during Sunday’s collapse, as safety Jevon Holland (knee) and cornerback Paulson Adebo didn’t finish the game with knee injuries and both didn’t practice on Wednesday. NFL sack leader Brian Burns (hip) also missed practice but is “good” to play Sunday, per Burns himself.
Philadelphia Eagles
Receiver DeVonta Smith said it was only a matter of time until this Eagles passing game got going, and that was the case last week at Minnesota. Smith recorded a career-high 183 receiving yards in the 28-22 win, 79 of which came on a long touchdown strike from Jalen Hurts. The Eagles QB finished with 326 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions… but maybe most importantly he found a connection with both Smtih and A.J. Brown. Hurts found Brown for his other two touchdown passes last week, and Brown went off for 121 yards too.
Brown missed practice Wednesday with a hamstring injury, and centre Cam Jurgens (knee) also sat out so both players’ status are worth monitoring as the week progresses.
The major concern looming over this Eagles team is Saquon Barkley’s production. After a 2,000-yard campaign a year ago, Barkley is averaging 3.3 yards per carry and is yet to break off a 20-yard run. So far this isn’t the dominant Eagles team we saw en route to a Super Bowl a season ago, but the key pieces are still in place which should make this Sunday a tune-up kind of game.
