Giants vs. 49ers Point Spread: Sunday Night Football

The San Francisco 49ers will head East for Sunday Night Football as they look to snap a three game losing streak. The New York Giants are hoping to offset a slow 2-2 start to the season and a game against the offensively challenged 49ers could be just what they need to take control in a division that’s up for grabs. The point spread is currently favoring the Giants at -7.

Sunday Night Footall: San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants

Point Spread: Giants -7 Over/under: 43.5 Date: Sunday, October 11 8:30pm ET Location:Metlife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers offense has been problematic, but has a chance to perform against a suspect Giants defense. Colin Kaepernick shoulders much of the blame for San Francisco’s inability to find the end zone, but the more likely culprit is the offensive line that has failed to protect the quarterback. New York is ranked dead last in passing defense, allowing an average of 316 per game. Now is the time for Kaepernick to prove that he’s a better quarterback than he’s shown, and as +7.5 underdogs, that’s a tall order.

Last week, the defense did everything right against the Packers, holding them to just 17 points and getting in Aaron Rodgers‘ face all game. Another strong performance from the defensive line is crucial to the 49ers efforts against the Giants. Historically, Eli Manning struggles against good pass rushes but if given time can cut up a secondary. San Francisco will need good secondary play otherwise receivers Victor Cruz and Odell Beckham, Jr. will run wild.

New York Giants

The Giants boast the no. 1 ranking in the league against the rush, which benefits them against 49ers running back Carlos Hyde. Bottling up the running game forces an ineffective Kaepernick to beat them with his arm, which could expose New York’s real liability: their secondary. The Giants primary focus will be taking advantage of a poor 49ers offensive line and minimizing the amount of deep passes their secondary has to defend.

Facing a tough defense, if New York can establish the run game early and use that to take a few shots down field, they’ll put the 49ers in a tough spot of having to come from behind. After two late-game meltdowns by the offense to start the season, the Giants have looked more disciplined in their last two games and will need to continue that trend against San Francisco.

Sunday Night Football Prediction

The 49ers offense has appeared to regress each week and it doesn’t look to improve against the Giants. New York’s defense will be up to the task of stopping both Hyde and Kaepernick from doing any damage on the ground and making San Fran’s offense one dimensional. Without a quarterback that can make good defensive reads, the 49ers simply won’t put up many points.
