NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Get used to the Dallas Cowboys being featured in nationally televised standalone games as they are scheduled for six this year, which also includes on the American Thanksgiving holiday. Very possible the Cowboys could be flexed into a Sunday night game later in the year, too. People either love or hate the Cowboys, but they draw ratings and betting action.

Of course, Dallas and Philadelphia play twice every season being in the same NFC East. With both at 1-1, the Cowboys are -137 favourites to win the division, Washington (also 1-1) the +298 second-favourite and the Eagles +449.

Last season, these teams split with each winning at home. It should be noted that the Cowboys didn’t have star quarterback Dak Prescott for either but eminently forgettable Ben DiNucci starting in one and Andy Dalton (now in Chicago) the other. Current Eagles starting QB Jalen Hurts did play in Philly’s 37-17 loss in Dallas in Week 16 and threw for 342 yards and a TD with two picks while rushing for 69 yards.

The home team is 5-0 ATS in the past five meetings.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles looked fantastic offensively under first-year coach Nick Sirianni in a Week 1 blowout win in Atlanta but did little in their 17-11 home loss in Week 2 to San Francisco. The jury is still out on second-year QB Jalen Hurts – those Deshaun Watson trade rumours aren’t going away – as he was just 12-for-23 for 190 yards vs. the Niners but did rush for 82 yards and a score.

Rookie wideout DeVonta Smith, the 2020 Heisman Trophy winner, was a non-factor vs. the Niners with two catches for 16 yards. The injury news was not great from that game as Pro Bowl defensive end Brandon Graham was lost for the season and Pro Bowl guard Brandon Brooks likely will land on injured reserve, which would mean a minimum of three games missed. Tight end Zach Ertz landed on the COVID list Monday. The Eagles are 1-6 ATS in their past seven road games.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys were somewhat fortunate to win Sunday at the Los Angeles Chargers, 20-17. Fortunate because the Chargers kept having touchdowns called back due to penalty and fortunate because Dallas coach Mike McCarthy had some very questionable clock management on the final drive, which culminated in a 56-yard winning field goal as time expired from Greg Zuerlein.

Dallas played without three defensive starters led by pass-rushing stud DeMarcus Lawrence, who will miss at least six weeks. Offensive tackles La’El Collins and Ty Nsekhe and receiver Michael Gallup also missed it. Collins and Gallup won’t play this week. Neither might No. 1 wideout Amari Cooper. He suffered a ribs injury against the Chargers. Cooper has 16 catches for 163 yards and two scores.
