Miami opened up their season with a dramatic statement victory when they topped the Chargers 36-34 behind a massive Tyreek Hill showing. New England started off their season on a losing note, falling 25-20 versus Philadelphia.
With the AFC East touted as one of the league’s most competitive division, these head-to-heads become even more important. There’s a strong possibility more than one club from the AFC East reaches the playoffs, and so a 2-0 start for Miami would be just as crucial as an 0-2 start for New England. Bottom line, this matchup is massive for Week 2.
Kickoff at Gillette Stadium Sunday night goes at 8:20 p.m. EDT with the Dolphins three-point favourites on the road and the total at 46.5 on the NFL odds.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
As per most historical Patriots statistics, New England tends to have success when hosting Miami with wins in 12 of their last 14 matchups in Massachusetts. Four of the last five Dolphins–Patriots meetings have gone in Miami’s favour though as a certain New England quarterback has since retired. The Dolphins have also covered in each of their last five meetings with New England.
Overall the Pats are 0-5 ATS in their last five games, and 1-4 ATS in their last five home contests. Eight of Miami’s last nine road games have finished over the total, and they did participate in Week 1’s highest-scoring game.
Miami Dolphins
In case you forgot, Tyrek Hill is one of, if not the best, receiver in the NFL. Hill’s 215 receiving yards led all players in Week 1 and was the third-highest total in the history of Week 1 in the NFL. The superstar speedster also found the end zone twice while hauling in 11 receptions.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa also had a fantastic, debut tossing 466 yards and a trio of touchdowns in the win at Los Angeles. The Dolphins as a team posted a Week 1 franchise-high of 536 yards of offence. Miami possesses one of the fastest offences in the NFL; they’ve shown they can win track meets but improvement is still needed on the other side of the ball.
New England Patriots
Week 1 was shaping up to be a disaster for New England, only for a comeback to fall short to the defending NFC champs. The Patriots even had two late shots to drive down and win the game, which says a lot after they fell into a 16-0 hole after two turnovers and a trio of three-and-outs.
Quarterback Mac Jones still finished with 316 passing yards and three touchdowns in the loss, hitting Kendrick Bourne twice in the end zone. Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 29 yards on seven carries in his Pats debut.
New England was down two starters on their offensive line last week in Cole Strange and Mike Onwenu. The Pats went with two rookies in their places. Both Strange and Onwenu limited in Wednesday’s practice.
