Week 3 in the NFL closes Monday night with the Dallas Cowboys, again without QB Dak Prescott, visiting the surprising New York Giants, who are -2.5 on the NFL odds.

The Cowboys are on prime time several times a season simply because they are America’s Team, and the Giants are at least once or twice simply because they are located in the USA’s biggest media market. This matchup obviously lost a lot of luster with Dallas losing quarterback Dak Prescott for 4-8 weeks in the season opener (although there’s some talk he could be back Week 4). I think if ESPN could flex this one rout right now, it would. Funny, though, how often the unappealing matchups end up being the best games.

Dallas was good last year and New York wasn’t, so not a surprise the Cowboys swept fairly easily. The one in New Jersey was 21-6 with Prescott throwing for 217 yards and a pick. The Giants were without starting QB Daniel Jones, and the duo of Mike Glennon and Jake Fromm was predictably terrible. Neither is with a team in the league currently, and Glennon almost surely never will be again.

The Cowboys are 8-2 against the spread in the past 10 meetings.

Dallas Cowboys

Are the Cowboys better off with former Central Michigan quarterback and 2017 undrafted free agent Cooper Rush as their starting QB over the injured Dak Prescott? Obviously not, but Rush is 2-0 straight up and ATS as a starter following a 20-17 home upset win over Cincinnati on Sunday. Rush was an efficient 19-for-31 for 235 yards with a TD and no turnovers. That’s all any team can ask of its No. 2. Top tight end Dalton Schultz suffered a knee injury in the win and will miss at least one week, although he hasn’t been a huge part of the offence so far. Michael Gallup, projected as the No. 2 receiver, hasn’t played yet this year as he recovers from a knee injury but might make it back Monday. Linebacker Micah Parsons has been arguably the NFL’s top defender with a league-leading four sacks. The Cowboys are 4-0 ATS in their past four road games.

New York Giants

So far, so good for first-year Giants head coach Brian Daboll as his club is off to its first 2-0 start since 2016. Big Blue has been a bit lucky so far as the two wins over the Titans and Panthers (who are both winless) have been by a combined four points. Graham Gano kicked a 56-yard field goal with 3:34 to play in Sunday’s 19-16 win over the Panthers. Before the 2021 season, the Giants stunned the NFL world by signing former Lions receiver Kenny Golladay to a four-year, $72 million deal. He was a mega-bust last year and the new regime has no ties to him and has completely phased him out of the offence. New York took receiver Kadarius Toney in Round 1 last year and he isn’t getting much run, either. Pass-rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, the No. 5 overall pick in this year’s draft, has missed the first two games due to injury but may be ready Monday. The Giants are 1-4 ATS in their past five vs. the NFC East.
