NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Detroit, Minnesota and Philadelphia are competing for the NFC’s top seed in the postseason and the Lions and Vikings are in the same NFC North and play one another in Week 18, so that could work out well for the Eagles depending on what happens with those two clubs in Week 17. Philly clinched the NFC East title a while ago but only the top seed in each conference, remember, gets a bye on Wild-Card Weekend. To win the conference, the Eagles are +290 second-favourites.

Dallas was eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday and this is the club’s final road game of the season. The Week 18 home game vs. Washington will be the last game as Cowboys coach for Mike McCarthy, guaranteed. Bill Belichick had been rumoured as a possible replacement but shockingly took the head coaching job recently at the University of North Carolina. And it’s not going to be Colorado coach Deion Sanders, either, even though he spent some of his Hall of Fame playing career with the Cowboys.

Including four playoff meetings, Dallas is 74-57 all-time vs. Philadelphia after losing at home, 34-6, in Week 10. That was the Cowboys’ first game after losing starting QB Dak Prescott to a season-ending injury. Backup Cooper Rush was horrific before being benched but has played much better in recent weeks. Eagles QB Jalen Hurts threw for two scores and rushed for two.

Dallas Cowboys

Dallas was eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16 despite a 26-24 home upset of Tampa Bay that might end up costing the Bucs the NFC South title and a playoff spot. It was the Cowboys’ fourth win in the past five games and now they can at least finish the season with a winning record by winning out.

Backup QB Cooper Rush struggled badly in his first game after replacing the injured Dak Prescott as we mentioned but played well again Sunday by throwing for 292 yards and a TD on Sunday with no turnovers to make up for a running game that managed only 31 yards.

Kicker Brandon Aubrey is making long field goals routine and made field goals from 58, 49, 58 and 53 yards. His 14 makes from at least 50 this season are an NFL record.

Dallas played Sunday without leading tackler and injured linebacker Eric Kendricks and then lost Pro Bowl receiver CeeDee Lamb for some of the second half and fellow wideout Jalen Tolbert at the end of the first half to injuries. Lamb still managed a second straight 100-yard game. It’s possible he’s shut down now to heal that bothersome shoulder with nothing to play for but pride. The Cowboys are 4-1 ATS in their past five.

Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia’s chances of getting the NFC’s top seed took a massive hit in Sunday’s 36-33 last-second loss at Washington to see a franchise-record 10-game winning streak snapped. It was the Eagles’ first loss this season with Pro Bowl WR AJ Brown in the lineup as they had been 11-0. I don’t believe they lose that game if star QB Jalen Hurts isn’t knocked out in the first quarter with a possible concussion. And then backup Kenny Pickett left as well.

But that the Eagles are still nearly 10-point favourites this week tends to hint that oddsmakers believe Hurts will be ready. Since Hurts’ first full season as a starter in 2021, the Eagles are 45-17 in games that Hurts has started and 1-3 without him. Running back Saquon Barkley continued his historic season Sunday with 150 yards rushing and two scores. He’s now all but a lock for NFL Offensive Player of the Year and could break the NFL single-season rushing yardage mark.

Philly must win out to get the NFC’s top seed, have Detroit lose out and Minnesota lose to Green Bay this week and then beat the Lions in Week 18. Philly is 2-9 ATS in its past 11 December games.
