Chiefs vs. Giants Point Spread: SNF Week 3 Odds, Prediction

Patrick Mahomes & Co. are -5.5 on the NFL odds with a total of 44.5 points.

Sunday Night Football Point Spread and Betting Analysis

These two franchises couldn’t be more polar opposite at the quarterback position. Kansas City has been the NFL’s dominant franchise since 2018, the year that Patrick Mahomes became the team’s full-time starting quarterback. The Chiefs should be contenders for at least the rest of the decade simply because of Mahomes.

The Giants have been searching through the wilderness for a franchise quarterback since Eli Manning retired after the 2018 season … although really longer because Manning wasn’t very good his final few seasons. New York signed two veterans this offseason in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston as well as drafted Jaxson Dart out of Ole Miss late in Round 1.

Wilson once was one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks but those days are long, long gone at age 36. Dart is obviously the future, or at least the franchise hopes so, and he looked great this preseason. Brian Daboll is on one of the hottest seats in the league so he opted to open the season with the veteran Wilson under centre, but the team is 0-2 yet again. Dart beat out Winston for the backup job. Would Daboll pull the plug already on Wilson ahead of Week 3 and go with Dart? Not yet.

New York leads Kansas City all-time, 11-4, and they have never met in the postseason. The last meeting was a 20-17 Chiefs home win in November 2021. Mahomes threw for 275 yards and a score, and Harrison Butker hit the winning field goal with 1:07 left. Daniel Jones was the Giants’ QB then but is now starting with Indianapolis.

Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes had made 134 consecutive starts to open his career including playoffs without losing three in a row. That was by far an NFL record but was snapped this past Sunday as the Chiefs lost 20-17 at home to Philadelphia in a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl. Mahomes, a home underdog for just the second time, threw for 187 yards with a TD and pick. That offence doesn’t look right yet with Mahomes averaging a scant 3.4 yards per attempt on third down, which is last in the NFL. But it doesn’t help that Mahomes is missing two of his top wideouts in the injured Xavier Worthy and suspended Rashee Rice. Worthy might be able to return this week, but Rice remains out.

Kansas City is only the sixth team in history to start 0-2 after at least 14 wins the previous regular season. None of the previous five clubs won a playoff game that 0-2 year. Only three teams in history have won a Super Bowl after starting 0-2 and not since the 2007 New York Giants. Starting defensive end Mike Danna left Sunday’s loss with a quad injury. The Chiefs are 2-6 ATS in their past eight road games.

New York Giants

Many Giants fans were calling for embattled coach Brian Daboll to bench veteran starting QB Russell Wilson after just one game and start rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart this past Sunday in Dallas. Daboll stayed with Wilson, who was fantastic in throwing for 450 yards and three scores. New York should have upset the Cowboys but lost 40-37 in overtime. The teams combined for five consecutive go-ahead TDs in the final 12 minutes of the fourth quarter, and there were 41 total fourth-quarter points scored, the most in the history of the Giants-Cowboys rivalry. It was the most points the Giants scored in a loss since 2015, and they are 0-2 for the 10th time in the past 13 seasons. Wilson surely will remain the starter after the fifth 450-yard game in franchise history.

With nine catches, second-year Malik Nabers has 123 receptions through 17 career games, breaking Odell Beckham Jr.’s NFL record of 122 in the first 17 games of a career. Nabers (167 yards) and Wan’Dale Robinson (142 yards) became the fourth Giants duo to record at least 140 receiving yards in the same game. Offensive tackle James Hudson III committed four penalties on the opening drive before getting benched, and the Giants had 14 penalties for 160 yards. They are 3-11 ATS in their past 14 games.
