Just like how Alabama and Clemson facing off in the College Football Playoff has become old hat, so has the New England Patriots winning the AFC East Division and getting a first-round bye. This is the ninth straight season the Patriots have won the division, earned a first-round bye and won at least 11 regular-season games. Those are all NFL records.

NFL Playoffs Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Patriots have won their past seven Divisional Round games. Their last loss in the round was following the 2010 season when they were upset 28-21 to the Jets. How long ago was that? Rex Ryan was the Jets’ coach, Mark Sanchez was still considered a potential franchise quarterback, and tailback LaDainian Tomlinson was on that team. Last year, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The LA Chargers might be one of the best Wild Card teams ever with their 12-4 record. They have just two losses in their past 14 games. The Bolts are 0-7, though, against Tom Brady and the Patriots, including playoffs, since Philip Rivers became the starting quarterback in 2006. Rivers’ lone career win vs. New England came in the 2008 regular season when Brady was out injured for the year and Matt Cassel was the quarterback.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Ravens had never been one-and-done in the playoffs under Coach John Harbaugh and were slight home favourites on Sunday, but the Chargers clearly learned from their Week 16 home loss to the Ravens as they prevailed 23-17. The L.A. defence was spectacular all day, focusing on stopping the run and daring rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson to beat them. He threw for 194 yards, two TDs and a pick but a lot of his positive numbers came late in the game when the Chargers were up big. Baltimore was held to 90 yards rushing. The Chargers haven’t lost a game this season outside of the L.A. area. They were 7-1 on the road and that loss was at the Rams.

New England Patriots

Getting a first-round bye is huge for any team, but especially the Patriots as they finished with an 8-0 home regular-season record for the seventh time in team history – all since 2003. New England has won 13 straight home regular-season games. The team has never reached a Super Bowl under Bill Belichick without having a first-round bye.

Tom Brady had another fine season but at times did look like a 41-year-old quarterback. How long can Brady play at a high level? He also lost one of his top receivers a few weeks when Josh Gordon had another off-field incident. Tight end Rob Gronkowski was beaten up all year and simply looked done. He probably retires after this season. It truly could be the end of this incredible run.
