Chargers vs. Giants Point Spread: NFL Week 4 Odds, Prediction

The Los Angeles Chargers, off to their first 3-0 start in 23 years, travel to East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday afternoon to take on the winless New York Giants at 1 p.m. ET.

The Chargers became the first NFL team since 2006 to defeat three consecutive division opponents to start a season after knocking off the Denver Broncos at home last week, 23-20.

The Giants and their fans may have seen the last of veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, who was ineffective in last week’s 22-9 defeat at home to the Kansas City Chiefs. Rookie Jaxson Dart will make his NFL debut on Sunday, as Giants coach Brian Daboll’s seat gets hotter with each passing week.

The Chargers are 6.5-point favourites to win on the NFL odds, with the total pegged at 44.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Chargers are 2-0-1 against the spread this season and 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven games overall, dating back to last season. Los Angeles is 4-1 ATS in its previous five road games and 5-0 straight up and against the spread versus the Giants.

New York, one of six winless teams remaining in the NFL, is 3-12 against the spread and 1-14 straight up in their last 15 contests, and 1-9 in their latest 10 games at home.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert appears to be a solid bet to throw for more than 1.5 touchdown passes (-135) and more than 33.5 pass attempts (-115).

Los Angeles Chargers

Herbert continues to thrive in coach Jim Harbaugh’s offence, and rookie running back Omarion Hampton may be set to break out. Herbert threw for 300 yards last week and is averaging 286.7 per game so far this season. He has six touchdowns and one interception, and he has a trio of receivers he is comfortable with, including Quentin Johnston, who has led the Chargers in receiving yards all three games.

Hampton had a career-high 129 yards from scrimmage and scored a rushing touchdown against Denver. Veteran running back Najee Harris, the only other back with more than 10 carries, tore his Achilles tendon last week, so Hampton will be expected to shoulder the load going forward.

New York Giants

It’s Dart’s team now. The Giants’ fans were clamouring for the rookie out of Ole Miss last week, chanting his name while Wilson struggled, tossing two interceptions and no touchdowns, and throwing for 160 yards a week after dropping 450 yards and three TDs against the Cowboys.

Nobody needs this move more than star wide receiver Malik Nabers, who was held to two catches for 13 yards against the Chiefs. The second-year wideout had nine catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns against Dallas the week before. Those need to be his regular stats.

Rookie running back Cam Skattebo, like Hampton, is beginning to emerge as a lead back. He had 121 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown last week versus Kansas City. With fellow back Tyrone Tracy hobbled by an injured shoulder, Skattebo may see even more work this week.

NFL Prediction: Who Will Win Chargers vs. Giants?

Los Angeles has surrendered an AFC-best 50 points in three games. Despite his promise, Dart will be hard-pressed to challenge the Chargers’ elite defence in his first career start. It will be fun to watch Hampton’s and Skattebo’s continued emergence, but look for Los Angeles to easily handle New York, 31-10.
