Monday Night Football NFL Point Spread and Betting
Arguably no coach entered this season on a hotter seat than Washington’s Jay Gruden, and he might not make it to October if his team loses this game and then next week at the New York Giants (and we think those are both losses). NFL general managers ideally wait until a bye week to fire a coach, but Washington’s isn’t until Week 10. Feel confident saying Gruden won’t be around by then.
Chicago, meanwhile, clearly hates playing NFC East teams. The Bears have lost their past 10 against the division dating to 2013, including that gut-punching playoff home playoff defeat to Philadelphia in January. The Bears have covered the spread just once in those 10.
It’s the first meeting since 2016 when Chicago was one of the NFL’s worst teams and Washington finished 8-7-1 – the last time the franchise had a winning record. Washington was a 41-21 winner Week 16 in Chicago with about half of Soldier Field empty. Kirk Cousins was still the Redskins’ quarterback then and threw for 270 yards and a score while rushing for two. Chris Thompson, who is still around, rushed for a score and caught a TD pass. Journeyman Matt Barkley was Chicago’s quarterback and was picked off five times, tied for second-most in Bears history. That’s why Barkley is a journeyman.
Washington has covered the past five in the series and the total has gone over in four of the five.
Chicago Bears
The Bears were staring 0-2 in the face but were the beneficiaries of a very questionable roughing-the-passer call late in Sunday’s game in Denver. That helped Chicago get into position for a 53-yard field-goal try by Eddy Pineiro, who won a spirited kicking competition in training camp. Pineiro made it as time expired and the Bears won 16-14, celebrating like they won the Super Bowl. The entire city did because the memory of former kicker Cody Parkey double-doinking a potential winner in last season’s playoff loss to the Eagles is still fresh in everyone’s mind. While the Bears’ defence is clearly Super Bowl-calibre, this year, the offence is a major problem. Mitchell Trubisky really struggled in the Week 1 loss and wasn’t any better Sunday in throwing for only 120 yards. The Bears are 4-1 ATS in their past five on a Monday.
Washington Redskins
Washington isn’t Miami Dolphins bad but probably is the worst team in the NFC. The Redskins fell to 0-2 with Sunday’s 31-21 loss to Dallas in the Skins’ home opener. Probably be sooner rather than later that embattled coach Gruden replaces veteran quarterback Case Keenum, who actually has been solid, with rookie first-round pick Dwayne Haskins. Washington was without four injured players Sunday in tight end Jordan Reed (concussion), defensive lineman Jonathan Allen (knee), and cornerbacks Quinton Dunbar (knee) and Fabian Moreau (ankle). That defence allowed 14 plays of 10 yards or more. Washington is 1-4 ATS in its past five at home.
