Bears vs. Giants Point Spread: NFL Week 4 Odds, Prediction

The Bears remained unbeaten at home this season with last week’s narrow 23-20 win over Houston, but have won and covered in just three of 11 road dates since the end of 2020. The Giants wrap up a three-game home stand on the rebound after dropping a 23-16 decision to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. New York opened their campaign with consecutive straight up and against the spread wins, but has claimed victory in just one of four home dates.

Buoyed by the backing of 53% of sports bettors, the Bears have improved to 3-point underdogs since opening at +3.5. And with both these teams struggling offensively, the total quickly tumbled to 38.5 after opening at 40, but has since rebounded to 39.5.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Sunday afternoon’s matchup at MetLife Stadium marks the fifth time these long-time NFC rivals have met since the start of the 2018 NFL season. The Bears have held the upper hand, claiming victory in each of their past three dates with New York, all on home turf. However, the Giants have enjoyed similar success on home turf, earning the win in each of the Bears’ past three visits.

Low scoring has been commonplace in recent clashes between these teams, with the total topping 40 just twice during a steady 6-2-0 run for the UNDER. And apart from Chicago’s decisive 29-3 win when the Giants visited the Windy City in Week 17 of last season, recent head-to-head tilts have been hard fought, with the five previous matchups getting settled by an average margin of just 4.8 points.

Chicago Bears

The Bears have managed to claim victories in two of their first three contests, but this team still has a long way to go in their bid to return to respectability. Chicago enjoyed the benefit of heavy rains as they eked out a 19-10 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1. However, the Bears have had no handy excuses for what have been shaky offensive performances over their past two outings.

Justin Fields has particularly struggled in his first campaign as the team’s undisputed starter. Fields’ future under center was cast into doubt after a brutal performance last week, when he connected on just 8-of-17 pass attempts for 106 yards, no scores, and two interceptions. Overall, Fields has averaged just 99 passing yards per game through three outings, and has not found the end zone since Week 1. Making matters worse is the uncertain status of top rusher David Montgomery, who was forced to leave last week’s game with a knee and ankle injuries, and I far from assured of seeing action on Sunday. On a positive note, Khalil Herbert impressed after stepping in for Montgomery last week, running for 157 yards and two scores. The Bears defense stood tall after allowing Houston to tie last week’s game in the second half, limiting the Texans to just 30 total yards on their final three possessions of the contest.

New York Giants

For the second time in as many weeks, the Giants struggled to hold a lead after recess. And this time, there was no late scoring drive to seal the win. Indeed, New York struggled to contain an impressive Dallas Cowboys offence led by Dak Prescott’s backup Cooper Rush, which racked up 391 total yards while rolling to a 23-16 win.

Indeed, with the offence struggling with a rash of injuries, and quarterback Daniel Jones failing to get adequate pass protection from a porous offensive line, the Giants have generated just two total touchdowns over the past two weeks. It is tough to lay the blame solely on Jones, who has been forced to use every ounce of his mobility to attempt passes on the run. Jones has received no help from an offensive line that allowed him to be sacked five times last week, and 13 times so far this season. And with receivers Wan’Dale Robinson, Kadarius Toney, and Sterling Shepard all hampered by injuries, moving the ball against a stout Bears pass defence will be a massive challenge.
