49ers vs. Patriots Point Spread: NFL Week 7 Odds, Prediction
After a massive let down at home against a below .500 club, the New England Patriots are looking to redeem themselves at home in Week 7. Sound familiar? Well that’s because it’s the exact position their opponent, the San Francisco 49ers were in this past Sunday.
The 49ers defeated the LA Rams to stay afloat the NFC West in Week 6, and now the 2-3 Patriots are looking to do the same as they now sit third in their own division, the AFC East.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
It’s the 14th meeting all-time between these clubs, so history is not much of a factor. In fact, it was Colin Kaepernick outdueling Tom Brady during San Francisco’s last trip to Foxborough back in 2012 with the 49ers winning 41-34.
Both quarterbacks remain the prominent story Sunday. It’s Jimmy Garoppolo’s first visit back to New England after spending his first three seasons with the Patriots. On the other side, Cam Newton is looking for his first win under centre in just under a month. Newton should be feeling extra motivated Sunday since the “Garoppolo back to New England” rumours were catching waves before Newton ultimately signed with the Pats.
Oddsmakers got New England as a slight favourite, currently at -2.
San Francisco 49ers
Consistency is the key for the defending NFC champs. It’s a different story each week with the 49ers, who before last week had only beaten the New York Jets and Giants. Last Sunday’s win was the best San Francisco’s looked as they held the ball for nearly 38 minutes for an easy dub.
At 3-3, Kyle Shanahan’s squad is still in sole possession of last in the NFC West. But the 49ers are 2-0 on the road and have been solid for a while now going 5-1 ATS in their last six.
Unfortunately, the injuries keep piling up for San Fran. Starting running back Raheem Mostert appears doubtful for Week 7, and offensive lineman Trent Williams, linebacker Kwon Alexander, and safety Jaquiski Tartt all missed practice Wednesday.
New England Patriots
It’s been an odd 2020 for New England, and a below .500 record after six weeks is the latest hit toward Bill Belichick’s team. Granted, Newton and other players had been battling COVID-19 but it was still shocking to see the Patriots drop just 12 points at home against Denver.
The Pats rank 25th in points per game with 21.8 and things don’t get easier as the banged-up 49ers’ defence still ranks in the top five in yards per game against. The Patriots bread and butter is the ground game despite no running back reaching 20 yards in Week 6. Newton’s a proven mobile quarterback, but can Damien Harris and Rex Burkhead deliver now too?
