Bettors can rely on two truths whenever the Detroit Lions are home underdogs: They’re almost certain to lose, and the game is a good bet to feature plenty of scoring. The betting community eagerly waits to see if those trends will continue into 2021 as the Lions kick off their season Sunday afternoon against visiting San Francisco. The 49ers come in as the No. 6 favourite to win the Super Bowl, but will likely face stiff competition from an ultra-competitive NFC West division.

The 49ers are 7.5-point favourites to win on the NFL odds, with the total set at 45.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

If you’re a 49ers backer, this is not the number you want to see. Oddsmakers have added a critical hook to this line, which could be bad news when you consider that San Francisco is an abysmal 0-9-1 against the spread in its last 10 games as a fave of more than seven points (though in fairness, that record only “improves” to a still-awful 1-13-1 ATS in 15 games when giving up 7+). Detroit has dropped 12 straight games as a home ‘dog, losing by an average of 11.9 points.

The total for this one is installed at 45, with just over 60 per cent of Sports Interaction bettors leaning toward the Under. Not only have the Lions gone 9-3 to the Over in their past 12 games when receiving points at Ford Field, but 10 of those contests have produced at least 54 total points. San Francisco is also trending toward the Over, having gone a red-hot 11-4-1 O/U in its previous 16 games as a favourite dating back to late-October 2019.

San Francisco 49ers

The hype surrounding first-round pick Trey Lance reached a fever pitch during the preseason, but he’ll be holding a clipboard to start the season as the 49ers roll with incumbent QB Jimmy Garoppolo. Good health will be critical for a San Francisco team that saw injuries ravage its backfield last year, while also sidelining talented wide receiver Deebo Samuel and superstar tight end George Kittle. The 49ers are an intriguing +1200 play to win the NFL championship.

Detroit Lions

There probably isn’t much point in posting the Lions’ Super Bowl odds, since they’re widely expected to be among the worst teams in the league in 2021. The offence has undergone a complete makeover, beginning at quarterback, where Rams castoff Jared Goff looks to resurrect his career. He’ll have a largely unproven wide receiver corps at his disposal, though there is promise at running back with D’Andre Swift looking to break out in Season 2.
