The 49ers are coming off a stunning 31-10 upset win over the Los Angeles Rams, and are vying for their fourth away victory of the season on Sunday afternoon. The Jaguars are coming off a 23-17 loss in Indianapolis, but have claimed victory in each of their past two home dates.
The Niners are 6.5-point favourites to win on the NFL odds, with a total of 45.0.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
The point spread has fluctuated since opening with the 49ers pegged as 5.5-point favourites. Backed by 70 per cent of sports bettors, the Niners improved to 7.5-point chalk before settling back to their current position at -6.5. With both these teams recently turning in steady defensive performances, the total has faded to 45.0 since opening at 46.5, with 68 per cent of bets backing the UNDER.
Sunday afternoon’s matchup at TIAA Bank Field marks the first meeting between these two teams since December 2017. The 49ers have marched to three straight head-to-head wins while claiming victory by an average margin of 20 points, including a 42-10 rout in their last visit to Jacksonville eight years ago. The Niners have also dominated at the sportsbooks, covering in four straight meetings with the Jaguars. More important is San Francisco’s recent road success. The 49ers sport a 3-1 straight up road record this season, including a pair of outright wins as underdogs. However, the Jaguars have also impressed while posting two straight upset wins on home turf, capped by a 9-6 win over Buffalo as 14.5-point underdogs two weeks ago.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers signalled their intent to get back into the NFC playoff race with last week’s win over the Rams. San Francisco has now won two of three to end a four-game slide, while averaging 27 points per game. San Francisco rushers have tallied four scores over their past three games, and have easily exceeded 100 total rushing yards in four of five outings. However, injuries in the backfield have emerged as a concern. Elijah Mitchell and JaMycal Hasty both missed Wednesday practice due to injury. They were joined in the clinic by the team’s top receiver Deebo Samuel, who sat out Wednesday with a leg injury after claiming NFC Offensive Player of the Week honours for his efforts in last weekend’s win over the Rams.
Jacksonville Jaguars
All eyes have been on quarterback Trevor Lawrence in his NFL debut with Jacksonville this season. And with good reason. The top pick in this year’s NFL Draft showed flashes of his vast potential while tossing for eight scores in his first seven outings. However, it has been the Jaguars defence that has captured the spotlight while allowing just one total offensive touchdown over their past two outings. The Jags turned in a particularly stingy performance against the Super Bowl favourite Bills, intercepting quarterback Josh Allen on two occasions in a 9-6 win. And while they allowed the Colts to jump out to a 17-0 lead last weekend, they limited the Colts to 11 or fewer yards in eight of their subsequent 10 possessions.
