49ers vs. Giants Point Spread: NFL Week 9 Odds, Prediction
The 49ers were stifled in Houston by the Texans last week, 26-15. Christian McCaffrey was held to 68 total yards as San Francisco was outgained, 475-223. The team trailed by 16 points before it achieved its first first down, allowing Houston’s C.J. Stroud to throw for a season-high 318 yards.
The Giants could not replicate this season’s most complete performance, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-20. New York surrendered 277 yards on the ground, allowing Saquon Barkley to average 10.7 yards per carry. Meanwhile, New York lost Cam Skattebo, the popular and productive rookie running back, for the season with a dislocated ankle.
NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis
On the NFL odds board, San Francisco is 3-2 against the spread in road games. The 49ers are 5-1 ATS and 4-2 straight up in their last six meetings with the Giants.
New York is 2-1 against the spread at home. The Giants have lost nine of their last 12 games at MetLife. The teams have played to the over four times in their last five meetings.
Jaxson Dart has thrown just three interceptions in five starts. The 49ers have just one interception as a team all season. That makes Dart a solid bet at +100 to throw fewer than 0.5 picks on Sunday.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers are struggling in several areas, none more so than their pass rush, which produced zero sacks against Houston’s much-maligned offensive line last week.
Nick Bosa is already out for the year, and the team lost defensive tackle Jordan Elliott and end San Okuayinonu to ankle injuries against the Texans. San Francisco traded for New England’s Keion White and may not be through adding players via the trade market.
On offence, the 49ers rank second in passing (259.3 ypg) and 30th in rushing (89.9 ypg), so look for opponents to continue forcing San Francisco to utilize its weak ground game more often. Brock Purdy could be back under center, but Mac Jones has acquitted himself well over the past several weeks.
New York Giants
Losing Skattebo is a dagger for a Giants squad that benefitted from the good vibes created with his and Dart’s insertion into the starting lineup. The bruising running back from Arizona State scored on a touchdown reception against the Eagles last week before the injury, giving him seven scores on the season.
Without Skattebo and No. 1 receiver Malik Nabers, the onus now falls even more on Dart, who was sacked five times against Philadelphia.
Defensively, the Giants are 30th against the run, allowing 148.9 yards rushing per game. Brian Burns is tied for the NFL lead with 10 sacks, but the Giants’ D needs to contain opposing backs considerably better.
NFL Prediction: Who Will Win 49ers vs. Giants?
McCaffrey followed a season-high 129-yard, two-touchdown performance in a 20-10 triumph over the Atlanta Falcons with a season-low 25 yards rushing and just 11 touches overall in the loss to the Texans. Look for him to take last week’s frustration on the Giants.
No matter who is under center, Purdy or Jones, the 49ers should pick up their fourth road win with a 24-17 victory.
