This matchup at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City is the last international game of the season – Arizona is technically the home team. It’s the first time the NFL there since 2019. Back in 2005, the 49ers and Cardinals played the NFL’s first international regular-season game ever also in Mexico City. There were 103,467 fans in attendance, the eight largest crowd in NFL history.

Starting this season with the 17th game (which was actually added in 2021), up to four of the teams from the conference whose teams were eligible for a ninth regular-season home game would instead be designated to play a neutral-site international game each year. The NFC is that conference this year.

It’s the first meeting of the season between the 49ers and Cardinals – they will play again Week 18. Arizona swept last year, winning 17-10 at home and 31-17 in California. The underdog is 6-1-1 against the spread in the past eight meetings.

San Francisco 49ers

The Niners won their second in a row Sunday, 22-16 over the Chargers. San Francisco was down 10 early but blanked Los Angeles in the second half. Christian McCaffrey ran for the go-ahead touchdown with 7:54 to play. He has accounted for four touchdowns in three games since arriving from Carolina in a midseason trade. Fellow running back Elijah Mitchell returned from injured reserve and had 18 carries for 89 yards. Talanoa Hufanga had a late interception to seal it. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw was ejected for a helmet-to-helmet hit and could be suspended. Azeez Al-Shaair, who was in his first game back from injured reserve following a sprained knee, replaced Greenlaw and posted three tackles.

Arizona Cardinals

Arizona coach Kliff Kingsbury got off the hot seat temporarily on Sunday with a 27-17 win at the Los Angeles Rams in which both teams were without their starting quarterbacks. Too early to know if Kyler Murray will return from a hamstring injury this week. Veteran journeyman Colt McCoy was solid in his place, throwing for 238 yards and a TD. James Conner rushed for two scores. However, three-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz injured his knee and is expected to miss the season. He has 47 catches for 406 yards and four scores. Rookie Trey McBride is likely to get the first crack as the team’s starting tight end with Ertz sidelined. The Cardinals are 1-6 ATS in their past seven vs. the AFC West.
