It’s all down to a winner-take-all in Monday’s National Championship game. Can Nick Saban and Alabama take down undefeated Clemson?

NCAA football fans begged for a playoff format for years so that we’d get the best two teams in the college football playing for the National Championship. This year it worked out just as we all hoped as the undefeated No. 1 Clemson Tigers battle the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide to decide the CFP champion.

Alabama vs. Clemson Spread and Odds

Alabama is holding as a 7-point favourite against Clemson with 64 percent of bettors backing the Tide as of Friday, January 8. The total is set at 50.5. Clemson went 14-0 in the regular season but was just 7-7 against the spread while Alabama was 13-1 outright and 8-6 against the spread.

Alabama Crimson Tide

This is a Nick Saban team through and through that runs the ball and makes life difficult for opposing offenses. This defence is a nasty bunch that can get into the backfield the Tide ranked first in points and rushing yards allowed and second in total defence this season. On offense, they control the clock with Heisman-winning running back Derrick Henry, who has rushed for more than 2000 yards this season. Alabama doesn’t make many mistakes and capitalizes on its opponents errors. If the Tide force a turnover or two, it could be curtains for Clemson.

Clemson Tigers

If any team can get Alabama’s defence on its heels, it’s Clemson. The Tigers’ spread attack is extremely dangerous with dual-treat QB Deshaun Watson running the offence. Clemson averages better than 38 points per game and can get it done on the ground or through the air. The Tigers also own a balanced defence that ranks No. 6 overall which will make Henry and the Tide earn every yard. Clemson can turn this game on its head early with a few big plays, forcing Alabama to play catch-up, but if they cough up turnovers and/or field position it could be a long night for the Tigers.

NCAA Championship Prediction

Alabama may be a more talented team, but the Tide don’t have the Tigers’ versatility. If Clemson is able to keep Henry from taking over this game and keeps it close early, one big play could put Dabo Swinney’s team in the driver’s seat.
