Two football programs who’ve been around since the 1800s meet for the first time ever when the Music City Bowl kicks off. Purdue comes into this matchup extremely happy knowing head coach Jeff Brohm didn’t get scooped up by a bigger program, while Auburn hopes it can put a disappointing 2018 season in the rearview mirror as quickly as possible.

Music City Bowl Betting Odds

Purdue put up some big headlines in 2018, but it finished with a .500 record, and went 2-3 against the spread and straight up in its last five games. The Boilermakers 49-20 win over Ohio State kept the Big Ten out of the college football playoff. Three weeks later they lost 41-10 to Minnesota as 10-point road favourites. Yuck.

Up-and-down, and inconsistent. That’s the best way to describe Purdue this season. The Boilermakers do have a solid offence. They averaged 459 yards and 31.9 points per game. The Over didn’t pay off for total bettors. Purdue finished with an even 6-6 Over/Under mark.

The Big Ten team won outright and covered as a 2.5-point underdog against Arizona State last season in the Farmers Bowl in Jeff Brohm’s rookie year coaching Purdue.

Auburn finished a disappointing 7-5 in the ultra-competitive SEC West. Oddsmakers set the Tigers season win total at 9 before the start of the campaign. The turning point of Auburn’s season happened in October against Tennessee. The Tigers lost outright 30-24 despite being listed as 14.5-point home chalk.

Gus Malzahn is once again leading Auburn to the postseason. The Tigers have played in a bowl game in each of the head coach’s six years at the program. Unfortunately for the school’s supporters, Auburn is just 1-4 straight up and 2-3 against the spread in his Malzahn’s first five bowl games.

Purdue Boilermakers

As mentioned, the Boilermakers are extremely happy to hold onto head coach Jeff Brohm. Louisville pushed hard to recruit its former star athlete, but he decided to return for a third year with Purdue.

Quarterback David Blough is the player to watch for Purdue. The senior is making his bowl game debut after four years as QB1 for the Boilermakers. He passed for 25 touchdowns against just eight INTs while completing 66.6 percent of his pass attempts this season.

Auburn Tigers

The Jarrett Stidham era appears to be coming to an end. The expectations were sky-high for Stidham when he transferred from Baylor. Auburn backers hoped the talented quarterback would finally bring balance to the team’s offense.

That didn’t really play out. Stidham stock is still in relatively decent shape with NFL scouts. A big performance in this bowl game could propel his case as a mid round pick in the upcoming pro draft.
