For the third time in the history of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament, the Final Four will consist of four no. 1 seeds competing for the right to play in the national championship game.

UConn, Maryland and Notre Dame will all return in a repeat of 2014’s Women’s Final Four with South Carolina making it’s first appearance in the national semifinals.

“That’s the way it is in women’s basketball,” Uconn head coach Geno Auriemma said. “The absolute best teams get to the Final Four. I’m not one bit surprised Notre Dame and South Carolina are there. That’s the way it is in our game. The best teams go to the Final Four every year.”

The UConn Huskies are playing for their third straight national title. A win this year would make it the school’s 10th overall in women’s basketball and would put coach Auriemma in a tie with the legendary UCLA coach John Wooden for the most of all-time.

Maryland has won 28 consecutive games heading into the Final four, going undefeated in conference play prior to the tournament. The Terrapins will face the Huskies in their Final Four match up. History is not in their favor as they have lost all three games against UConn in recent years, making it an uphill battle to make it to the championship.

The South Carolina Game Cocks will face Notre Dame, who took on UConn and lost in the championship game in 2014. Should UConn advance to the championship, neither team has fared well against the Huskies in the past. The Gamecocks faced UConn in the regular season and lost by 25 points on February 9th, while Notre Dame lost in the championship by double digits in 2014.

“We have been there a number of times and not been able to finish, ” said Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw. “Each year, we feel like maybe this will be our year, but I think we’re definitely celebrating this whole week of what we accomplished all year long because only one team is going to win.”
