Thunder vs. Spurs NBA Odds, Prediction: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s OKC Opens as Underdog
Oklahoma City and San Antonio open the season with immediate Western Conference stakes after the Spurs eliminated the Thunder in seven games in last year’s Western Conference final. San Antonio then fell to New York in the NBA Finals.
The matchup already has layers. Oklahoma City lost Lu Dort, Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins, while San Antonio is experimenting with an ultra-skilled three-guard group around Victor Wembanyama.
For the Thunder, opening night is as much about solving last spring’s matchup problems as it is about replacing departed rotation pieces.
Thunder vs. Spurs NBA Betting Odds
The Spurs check in as 2.5-point favourites on the NBA odds board, with a game total of 230.5.
San Antonio controlled this matchup last season, winning four of five regular-season meetings before taking the Western Conference final in seven games.
The Thunder’s best counter may be forcing San Antonio’s three-guard lineup to defend bigger wings and make repeated decisions in space.
Meanwhile, OKC’s ability to put multiple long defenders around Shai Gilgeous-Alexander could make life difficult for De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Replacing Dort’s point-of-attack defence is the immediate challenge.
Cason Wallace is the natural answer and should spend plenty of time on San Antonio’s primary perimeter creator. His ability to pressure the ball without constant help will be critical because OKC cannot afford to compromise its back-line coverage against Wembanyama.
The more intriguing wrinkle is 7-foot-4 rookie Aday Mara.
Chet Holmgren averaged only 10.7 points during last year’s conference final as Wembanyama’s length disrupted him at both ends. Mara gives Mark Daigneault another true centre-sized body,
potentially allowing Holmgren to spend fewer possessions wrestling with Wembanyama directly.
Offensively, a healthy Jalen Williams should also relieve some of the burden on Gilgeous-Alexander against San Antonio’s physical perimeter defence.
San Antonio Spurs
San Antonio’s three-guard alignment presents obvious offensive upside.
Fox can collapse the defence, Harper gives the Spurs another downhill creator and Castle can pressure smaller guards with his strength. The issue is balancing those overlapping skills without shrinking the floor around Wembanyama.
Harper’s 38% catch-and-shoot three-point mark as a rookie helps, but Castle still needs to become a more consistent off-ball threat when Fox or Harper initiates.
Tobias Harris should give the Spurs another useful option at the four, especially when Oklahoma City goes bigger.
The matchup to watch is Wembanyama against OKC’s changing frontcourt looks. If Mara can absorb some physical minutes and Holmgren can operate more freely as a helper, San Antonio may not enjoy the same interior advantage it had last spring.
NBA Prediction: Who Will Win Thunder vs. Spurs?
San Antonio deserves to be favoured at home, but this matchup favours Oklahoma City more than it did four months ago.
Williams is healthy, Wallace is ready for a bigger defensive role, and Mara gives Daigneault a new way to handle Wembanyama’s size.
The Spurs still have to prove their three-guard lineup can function cleanly at both ends, particularly against a Thunder defence built to force quick decisions and attack weak links.
I expect another close game, but this time Oklahoma City finds the late answers.
