NBA Odds: Will Pascal Siakam be signed or moved ahead of the trade deadline?

NBA: Philadelphia 76ers at Toronto Raptors

Are the Toronto Raptors ready to move on from Pascal Siakam and fully turn the franchise reins over to Scottie Barnes?

The Toronto Raptors made the biggest in-season move of the year a little over a week ago, trading OG Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa and Malachi Flynn to the New York Knicks for Mississauga, Ontario native RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley and a 2024 second-round draft pick.

There’s a belief around the NBA that the Raptors aren’t done making moves and last week’s deal could have a direct impact on Pascal Siakam‘s future. So, if Siakam isn’t in Toronto’s long-term plans, where could he end up?

Pascal Siakam

Let’s make it clear that there is no guarantee Siakam will be traded. Siakam is in the last year of his contract and with just under one month until the Feb. 8 NBA trade deadline, Toronto has a few weeks to evaluate whether he fits with the new roster. Siakam is eligible to sign a four-year contract worth roughly $200 million until the end of June. That means team president Masai Ujiri and general manager Bobby Webster need to decide if they are willing to pay Siakam and Quickley, who will be an RFA in the off-season, somewhere in the ballpark of a combined $60 million next year. Remember, Scottie Barnes is eligible to sign a contract extension this off-season and Barrett will need a new deal in a few years.

If last week’s blockbuster move signals anything, it’s that the Raptors are building this team around Scottie Barnes. Next year, Barnes will be 23-years-old, Barrett will be 24 and Quickley will be 25. That doesn’t look like a fit with Siakam when you consider he turns 30 in April. Essentially, the Dinos need to decide if they are comfortable fully turning over the reigns of the franchise to Barnes, who is averaging career-bests in scoring (20.9), rebounding (8.9), assists (5.8), steals (1.5) and blocks per game (1.4).

Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly the new front-runners to land Siakam after Sacramento pulled out of the race over the weekend. That makes sense given you have a new ownership group in Dallas that wants to make a big splash and you have a 24-year-old superstar in Luka Doncic who deserves some help carrying the load. The Raptors would likely centre any deal with Dallas around 23-year-old Josh Green.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies have a lot of work to do to climb out of the hole they were in at the start of the season because of injuries and the Ja Morant suspension and Siakam would go a long way to helping them do that. Morant is likely the only untouchable on the roster, so that leaves Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. as the two most likely targets for Toronto. But, with the news Morant’s season is over after nine games because of a shoulder injury, Memphis could wait until the off-season and try to snag Siakam in free agency.

Indiana Pacers

It’s been no secret the Indiana Pacers have been interested in Siakam since at least last summer. Siakam’s ability to score and rebound would immediately ease the burden on Tyrese Haliburton, boosting Indiana’s league-best offence to even greater heights. Toronto would likely target at least one first-round draft pick in return along with some combination of Myles Turner, Buddy Hield, Jarace Walker, Obi Toppin and Jalen Smith.

Atlanta Hawks

Atlanta has a little less flexibility when it comes to making a deal for Siakam, so they would need to get creative. They’ve got plenty of draft capital available that they could pair in a package with De’Andre Hunter, Onyeka Okongwu and Saddiq Bey. The problem here is the deal makes more sense for the Raptors than the Hawks. Siakam won’t help Atlanta defensively and the team could still miss the playoffs with him on the roster.

Golden State Warriors

Could Toronto target another Ontario-born star in Thornhill native Andrew Wiggins? Wiggins is two years removed from an NBA championship and could replace Siakam as a veteran leader. For Golden State’s side, Siakam is a great fit offensively and Draymond Green can cover up some of Siakam’s defensive liabilities. Keep in mind, the Warriors also have plenty of draft picks to deal and if Wiggins is a no-go, the Raptors might be able to pry Jonathan Kuminga from Northern California to the Great White North.
