The Lakers have cooled off a bit after their hot start in late October and early November. L.A. was last in action on Friday at home, where they got another dose of the Western Conference competition in a 101-93 defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder. As stated, Utah has been at home all weekend. They battled the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday and fell 106-94.

Our NBA odds have placed the Lakers as significant -7.5 favourites.

Lakers vs. Jazz NBA Betting Odds

This is already the second regular season bout between these franchises. The first was just 12 days ago on Nov. 18 in the City of Angels when the Lakers defended their court thanks to a 124-118 victory. That was L.A.’s second win in a row over the Jazz and their fifth in six matches. The winner has netted at least 122 points in nine consecutive games and the loser at least 115 in seven of the last eight.

JJ Reddick’s group had begun the season brightly versus the spread but has struggled to find results lately. The Lakers have not covered six of their past seven opportunities. In fact, their last two wins against the spread have come against the Spurs, whom they tend to dominate. Other than that L.A. has fallen seven times in a row. Anthony Davis (left plantar fasciitis), D’Angelo (illness) Russell and Austin Reaves (pelvis) are listed as day-to-day.

That the Jazz are 4-15 straight up this season might not surprise anybody. Heading into the 2024-25 campaign, prognostics were not positive for this bunch. Still, they have a 8-11 tally ATS, although they too, like the Lakers, are having a rough go. Utah has failed to capitalize on four of their past five spreads. Jordan Clarkson is listed as Out with a foot injury.

Los Angeles Lakers

When things go the Lakers’ way, the fireworks are fun under the bright lights of Crypto.com Arena. When they don’t it’s often because they face sides that are simply better than them, as was the case on Friday against OKC.

Oklahoma sports the league’s second-best defence and it showed. Los Angeles mustered only 93 points, well below their season average of 114.4. What’s more, Dalton Knecht led the way with 20 points. Not that Knecht is a bad player (he’s won fans over quickly) but 20 won’t bet the Thunder. To their credit, the Lakers had a better defensive game than they normally do – limiting the Thunder to 40.9 per cent shooting – but were helpless in crunch time when Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took over.

Austin Reaves (11 points) and LeBron James (12 points) were turnover machines, each coughing up the ball five times. Lakers lose, 101-93.

Utah Jazz

Was Saturday’s 106-94 defeat to the Luka Doncic-less Mavericks a testament to how well Dallas is steering the ship without their star or how low things have gotten in Utah? Probably a little of both.

As alluded to, expectations were low entering the season for the Jazz. Some predicted they’d be among the worst teams in the NBA, and so far they aren’t wrong. They don’t score a lot (108.6, 23rd league-wide), and they don’t have a great defence (118.5 points against, 27th).

The truth about this game is that it was decided in the first quarter, which Utah lost 40-22. One can argue that plenty of teams in the modern NBA race back from such deficits, and that’s true, but the Jazz don’t have the firepower to accomplish the feat. One bright spot was that the offence was nicely distributed, as Lauri Markkanen had 19 points, Walker Kessler 18, John Collins 16, and Collin Sexton 13.

If Davis suits up for the Lakers, it could make for a fun battle of big men for rebounds.
