The 76ers closed out their first round series against Toronto with an impressive 132-97 Game 6 victory. But Joel Embiid suffered an orbital fracture late in Game 6 and is not traveling with the team. The Heat are also dealing with a rash of injuries in the wake of their decisive first round win over Atlanta, including Kyle Lowry, who will miss Game 1 with a hamstring injury.

Since opening as 4-point favourites on the NBA odds, the Heat have rocketed to 7.5-point chalk, backed by -122 odds. Miami also opens the series as heavy -385 chalk on the NBA playoff series prices, and sits just shy of the favourites on the NBA championship futures as a +568 bet. Philadelphia trails as a +308 wager on the series prices, and a distant +1937 bet to claim their first NBA title since 2001. The total has climbed slightly to 208.5 since opening at 208.

Monday night’s matchup at FTX Arena marks the fifth meeting of the season between these clubs. The two teams split the four-game season series, with each club earning one road win. Recent head-to-head clashes have been low-scoring, with the total topping 207 just once during a 4-1-0 run for the UNDER. The Heat have topped Philadelphia in four of five home dates, claiming victory by wide double-digit margins in their three most recent wins. These teams have met in the playoffs on two previous occasions. The Sixers bounced Miami in five games in a first round matchup in 2018, but fell in five games in a first round clash during the Heat’s march to the NBA Finals in 2011.

The Sixers went 51-31 during the regular season to claim the No. 4 seed in the East, and led the conference with a 27-14 road record. Philadelphia has covered in just three of 13 road dates, but has won outright in five of seven as a road underdog, including a 109-98 win in Miami on Jan. 15. Top seeds in the East with 53 wins, the Heat compiled a conference-best 29-12 home record, and ride a six-game home win streak into the series.

Philadelphia 76ers

The loss of Embiid is a massive blow for Philadelphia. The 28-year-old big man led the club with 30.6 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game during the regular season, and averaged 29 points and 10.3 boards in three road dates during the first round. Sixers coach Doc Rivers reportedly stated that the team will “play centre by committee” in Embiid’s absence. That likely means more playing time for veterans DeAndre Jordan and Paul Millsap, neither of whom saw action versus Toronto.

Miami Heat

The loss of Lowry is not the Heat’s only health concern. Miami has also listed Jimmy Butler, PJ Tucker, and Tyler Herro as questionable for Game 1. Butler led the club in scoring during the first round, averaging 30.5 points, but has not seen action since Game 4 due to a knee injury. Herro averaged 12.8 points per game off the bench in the first round but is battling a non-COVID illness. Tucker is hampered by a calf injury after averaging 6.2 boards in the first round.
