NASCAR: Viva Las Vegas for Drivers This Weekend
It’s time to roll the dice and go for the big prize as NASCAR’s Sprint Cup moves to Las Vegas this weekend for the Kobalt Tools 400.
Can Gordon repeat?
It took 66 races for Jeff Gordon to break his winless streak. Now he’s gunning for back-to-back trips to victory lane. We shouldn’t get too ahead of ourselves in assuming that the old Jeff Gordon is back. Prior to victory in Phoenix, Gordon’s last win was in Texas in 2009. That broke a 47 race barren spell and also looked like the return to prominence of the former Sprint Cup Champion. There is reason however to be optimistic about his chances this weekend. The man driving the #24 car has a new look pit crew backing him up this season, with Alan Gustafson taking charge. The pairing of Gordon and Gustafson appears to be working extremely well. NASCAR betting fans know to strike when the iron is hot so Gordon looks great value at +600 with Sports Interaction. Las Vegas has also been kind to Gordon in recent years, with him finishing sixth or better in five of his last six starts here.
Kyle Busch getting close
Two top five finishes to start the year have given Kyle Busch a ton of momentum entering this weekend. The younger Busch brother has been driving like a savvy veteran so far this season. That’s more than can be said for his brother Kurt Busch. The former Sprint Cup Champion has a terrible record in Las Vegas and is best avoided this weekend.
What about JJ?
The wins for Bayne and Gordon may have dominated the start of the season but there’s always the big dog in the back waiting to pounce. Jimmie Johnson knows that this time of year is all about winning. As favorite for Las Vegas, at +300 with Sports Interaction, the five-time Sprint Cup Champion should bring his A-game to the Kobalt 400 this weekend. Having won here last year, the driver of the #48 car knows what it takes to come out on top in Las Vegas.
Johnson knows what it takes to put together a championship season in NASCAR. While a fast start isn’t essential, winning early can ease the pressure down the stretch. I like Johnson to put together a smart race on Sunday and be amongst the contenders come the checkered flag.
